Utah First Lady, Abby Cox at SHHS

The Unified sports team at Salem Hills High School (SHHS) was recognized today by Utah First Lady, Abby Cox. She came to congratulate and help these students celebrate all of their accomplishments this year at a school-wide assembly. The athletes and partners at Salem Hills competed in Unified Soccer, Basketball, and Track, where they took home several medals and really learned how to work together as a team.

The school and SHHS Unified Coaches--Haylee Whiteley, Jennifer Hughes, Kyra Peery, Brock Peery--have all felt the significant positive impacts that Unified sports have brought. The students are learning to be more aware of others and the importance of belonging for all.

Haylee Whiteley stated, “We have learned more about coming as you are and finding your place in our community. Being a Unified Coach isn't a ‘job’ it's a privilege. As coaches our Athletes and Partners are teaching us vital components on how to respect and treat individuals of all different backgrounds, disabilities, and so much more. We love Unified, and if you ever have the chance to be involved you will never look back.”

Salem Hills High athletic director, Lee Gillie, said, “Having First Lady of Utah, Abby Cox, with Courtnie Worthen and Boston Iacobazzi from Special Olympics Utah was rewarding for our Unified Sports team and validating to our team of Coaches. Coach Haylee Whiteley, Coach Jennifer Hughes, Coach Kyra Peery, and Coach Brock Peery have led Salem Hills High School into year one of many to come for SHHS Unified Sports. Unified Sports is the perfect blend of competition and sportsmanship where everyone feels included, and all watching enjoy the event.”
