The Comprehensive School Counseling Program strives to have every student in the Nebo School District graduate from high school with the skills, knowledge, and social capital essential for successful transition to the next step towards completing postsecondary options.

To celebrate our counselors/social workers, here are just some of the positive thoughts spoken about them throughout Nebo School District:

“Our counselor offers advice and is remarkable when it comes to collaboration. She has been instrumental in helping our school establish a space for social and emotional learning. She teaches students how to recognize and acknowledge emotions appropriately, and she does it in a way that is memorable and engaging.  She is so awesome with the children! It is magical watching her at work.”

“Our counselor is inspiring to me. I want to emulate the way he makes all the students feel safe and cared for. He is so good at connecting with students and working with them.”

“Our counselor is tasked with the responsibility of addressing college and career awareness/readiness with elementary-age students, and her approach has been brilliant. She designed, from scratch, an entire program that encourages personal goal setting and life skills development. As part of the program, she put together a goal tracking binder that was provided to every student in the school. She follows up with the students and motivates them by celebrating their successes. She even arranged a special assembly to kick it all off.”

“Our counselor goes above and beyond to help our school. She has worked at the school since it opened and does so much behind the scenes. She is kind to all and is excellent at her job. She is very organized, positive, and generous!”

“Our counselor/social worker is so wonderful! He helps all of our students and he is always willing and happy to help with anything we need. He goes above and beyond with everything he does. I am blown away by all he does. Thank you!!”

“Our counselor has consistently taken time to help my children work through their schedules, college applications, scholarships, online classes and so much more. I can contact her, and she responds quickly. If she doesn't have the answer, she gets it and responds within the same day. On one occasion, my daughter was not feeling well. She needed some food and still had an hour before lunch. She went to her counselor and was able to get a granola bar that helped her feel better immediately. She really has bent over backwards to help my children succeed. They feel safe talking to her and I appreciate that so much. I attribute much of my student's success to our counselor.”

“Our counselor is absolutely amazing! She is a dedicated educator who puts the needs of students at the top of everything that she does. She is willing to do anything that is asked of her, even when it doesn't fall within the scope of ‘counselor.’ Our students know that she cares for them and many know that they have a true friend and advocate in her. She has developed a wonderful relationship with our Hispanic population and our students and parents come directly to her knowing that she will help them in their situation or answer their questions.”

“Our counselor meets with many students who have difficult situations that they struggle with. Her kind and caring qualities have made a difference in helping these students cope with hard home lives, learn anger management skills, and acquire skills for making friends. She is a valued member of our faculty, and we rely on her wisdom in dealing with difficult students.”

“Our counselor can usually be found in the front foyer greeting students as they enter the school. She is always happy, positive, and upbeat, and loves interacting with the students. She makes learning about positive character traits an entertaining experience, scheduling guest speakers and utilizing stories and movie clips that the kids can relate to, in order to teach the concepts that she wants them to internalize. She is also always available to meet with faculty to discuss students who are facing challenges and offers ideas on how best to help the student be successful.”

“Our counselor takes our nervous little seventh-graders under his big, tender wing and helps them find a friend and success in a new school. He will cry with a student who is struggling, find food for a student who is hungry, provide school supplies for a student in need, all without asking for help. He is a pillar in the school as well as in the community and students and parents know they can trust him and turn to him for any kind of help, and that he will come through and be there for them.”

“When our counselor enters the building, everyone smiles. She brings such a ray of sunshine with her wherever she goes. She is constantly helping someone. As the counselor, she is very aware of our students’ needs. She goes above and beyond to meet them. Not only does she meet one-on-one with students, but she does an amazing job going into the classrooms and teaching all students the life skills they need to be successful in the future.”

“Our counselor goes above and beyond to help the students at the high school be able to achieve. He is always at school with a bright smile and willing to help those who need his help and will put in several hours above the normal contract period to help make sure that student schedules are met, so that students are given the classes that they need in order to graduate. He has to individually look at each student's transcripts while he is making up their schedule to make sure they are getting the classes that they need to meet the graduation requirements. He helps our students become successful.”

Counselors throughout Nebo School District are busy. Here are just some of their duties:

Collaborative Classroom Instruction provides student knowledge, attitudes, and skills through instruction in four areas of development: academic/learning, life/career, multicultural/global citizenship, and social/emotional from the Utah College and Career Readiness Student Mindsets and Competencies.

Plan for College and Career Readiness/SEOP is a process designed to help individual students establish personal goals and develop future plans.  The student engages in next step planning, monitoring, and managing his or her goals toward college and career readiness with guided support from the school counselor and parent.

Systemic Approach to Dropout Prevention with Social/Emotional Supports meet the immediate concerns and needs of students.  Services are delivered to students through prevention and intervention approaches via consultation, individual and small-group counseling, crisis counseling, and referrals.

Administration of Program and Non-Counseling Activities consists of program development with the focus of equity, implementation, and management that connects to existing family and community support and to school improvement and student achievement.

SafeUT - Students this year have access to licensed clinicians at the University of Utah’s Neuropsychiatric Institute through the SafeUT App.  Students can anonymously report any unsafe, violent, or criminal activities.  Bullying, cyber-bullying, harassment, hazing, threats, as well as information about physical or sexual abuse; and suicide threats can be reported.  A clinician is available 24 hours a day to help students through any crisis.  Information is then shared with administrators or counselors at each school so that they can investigate and follow up with any reported incident.  This school year the district is averaging two referrals per week.

A big thank you goes to all our Nebo School District counselors and all they do for Nebo students, parents, staff, and faculty.
