Superintendent Nielsen, Assistant Superintendent Ben Ford, and Secondary Director RaShel Shepherd look forward to meeting with high school student leaders every couple of months to address the students’ concerns and listen to their successes.

When asked about the meeting, Superintendent Rick Nielsen said, “Focusing on students is what we are all about.”

Superintendent Nielsen continues to interact and focus on students. He spends time in all schools and has reached out to high school student leaders this month. Representatives from each high school took the opportunity to not only meet with the Superintendent, but also Assistant Superintendent Ben Ford, and Secondary Director RaShel Shepherd. They discussed topics such as: an inclusive culture, sportsmanship, what the district can do to help students in their educational learning process, upgrades on SHHS and MMHS buildings as well as timelines for SFHS, PHS, and SHS new buildings. The student leaders would love to see some planned district-wide activities.

“I am so impressed with these high school student leaders. They communicated and demonstrated pride in their schools and gratitude for their teachers and extra-curricular experiences. They shared great ideas on how their schools focus on creating inclusive school cultures.  They have a desire to build upon the good things happening in the schools and district. These students are very bright, positive, and insightful young adults,” said Dr. RaShel Shepherd, Secondary Director.

Superintendent Nielsen stated, “It continues to be personally gratifying to visit with students from every high school. We listen to their ideas, concerns, and successes. I will continue this gathering because it is important to focus on what is best for students.”

Student leaders that participated in the Youth Board discussion include the following students: Gabby Solorio and Ashley Scoubes, Landmark High; Brooke Ells and Joseph Nelson, Maple Mountain High; Maya Sorenson and Isaac Webster, Payson High; Paisley Payne and Questin Francis, Spanish Fork High; Kyler Baum and Scout Callister, Salem Hills High; and Jackson McClean and Megan Gehring, Springville High.

Superintendent Nielsen kept the meeting to one hour so the students could get back to their respective schools and activities.

Congratulations to Shelley Anderson for answering this week's "Where are we Wednesday?" challenge sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
