Utah State Board of Education Adopts Tax Reform Principles

SALT LAKE CITY— The Utah State Board of Education on Thursday adopted overarching principles in connection with ongoing statewide discussions regarding tax reform.

This is the Board’s first public statement concerning tax reform and comes as the state Legislature’s Tax Reform Task Force continues its work. 

As approved by the Board, the principles and statement are as follows:

As the state Legislature undertakes comprehensive tax reform, the Utah State Board of Education, in support of local education boards, emphasizes the importance of policy that aligns with the following principles:

Maintaining stability in funding for education

Increasing strategic investment in education

Accounting for variation in school districts’ ability to raise local revenue

Maintaining a constitutional guarantee for education funding
