Nebo School District is proud to announce that Ryan Adair, Director of Bands at Salem Hills High School, has been selected as one of Yamaha’s "40 Under 40" music educators for 2026. This prestigious national program recognizes outstanding music educators who demonstrate exceptional action, courage, creativity, and growth in their programs.
Now in its sixth year, the Yamaha “40 Under 40” program celebrates educators who go above and beyond to elevate music-making in their students' lives. Out of hundreds of nominations from across the country, Adair was selected for his innovative leadership and his commitment to building a "human-centered" music program in Salem.
Since Adair took the podium at Salem Hills, the music program has seen explosive growth, with enrollment doubling over the past five years. Adair credits this success to a philosophy of "vertical collaboration"—working closely with the music programs at Valley View Middle School and Salem Junior High to create a seamless path for young musicians.
“Our music program is built on trust, student ownership, and community,” Adair says. “On my own, I am just one person—but in collaboration with talented people, we are able to accomplish truly remarkable things.”
Adair’s impact stretches beyond the band room. He has intentionally expanded student roles to include real-world skills like live sound engineering, even bringing in industry professionals to mentor students. This hands-on approach ensures that Nebo students are gaining marketable skills while taking pride in their productions.
The "Skyhawk" spirit is also evident in Adair’s unique partnership with the Salem Hills athletic department. Unlike the traditional rivalry sometimes found between arts and athletics, Adair and the football coaching staff have forged a bond of mutual respect. From shared stadium practice schedules to the football coach publicly advocating for the band, the two programs work together to boost school culture.
One of the program’s highlights is the massive 300-member pep band night, where musicians from the middle school, junior high, and high school perform as one.
"This event has become a powerful recruitment and community-building tool," Adair explains. "Older students model leadership, while younger students experience the energy of high school band."
Nebo School District congratulates Ryan Adair on this well-deserved national recognition. His dedication to his students and his "Just Do Band" culture continue to make Salem Hills High a beacon for excellence in the performing arts.
