Pina's class

A typical school day at Springville Junior High turned into a powerful lesson in belonging this week. Thanks to an invitation from our district specialist, Mayor Packard visited Tara Piña’s ESL (English as a Second Language) classes to share a vital message: "You are wanted and needed here."

The Mayor took time out of his busy morning to sit down with students, offering words of encouragement and reinforcing that every student—regardless of their first language—is a valued member of our community.

The visit also highlighted the "why" behind our district’s curriculum. While these students work hard to master English, the district also emphasizes the importance of their native language skills. By extending Spanish class opportunities, we aim to help students:

  • Sharpen their primary language skills to become truly biliterate.

  • Prepare for future leadership roles where bilingualism is a massive asset.

  • Contribute meaningfully to the local workforce and community culture.

It was a beautiful reminder that our students aren't just learning for the classroom—they are preparing to lead the community they call home.
