Separation Anxiety Drop-off Helps
BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS
-Have conversations to prepare your student in advance for the feelings and emotions that accompany the transition and change that comes with starting school. Video Link
-Create a “goodbye ritual” and practice it every time there is a goodbye
-Special Handshake
-Goodbye phrase “See you later Alligator.” “After a while Crocodile.” or “You’re doing school, but we’re still cool.” “While we’re apart, I’m in your heart.”
AT HOME
-Be sure the student is well rested and fed before dropping off. If basic needs aren’t met, separation anxiety is more likely.
-Consistent morning routine at home
-No electronics or entertainment in the mornings
-Visual checklist of morning procedures (job chart)
-Get dressed
-Eat breakfast
-Brush teeth
-Gather school stuff
-Conversation about potential positive experiences at school
-Conversation about things to look forward to after school
DROPPING OFF AT SCHOOL
-Whenever possible, drop your student off AT THE CURB.
-Use the “goodbye ritual”
-Avoid any phrases that imply your student might not be OK at school. “Are you going to be ok?” “What are you scared or nervous about?” etc.
CONSISTENCY IS KEY!!!
Be sure your student knows school attendance is not negotiable.
