November 2020 Grants Given by the Nebo Education Foundation

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District.  Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students.  Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need.  Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the lives of students. (Remember to scroll through the photos.)

Springville High – Brian Ostler
Brian Ostler, welding teacher at Springville High said, “Thanks to the Nebo Education Foundation for the matching grant for a Pipe Beveler Machine for the welding students at Springville High School. This is a unique piece of equipment that will allow students to easily bevel pipes and plates for bend test practices and for qualification tests. This machine will give SHS students an edge in the career field of welding. This desire to purchase this beveler has been in the works since November of 2018! Thanks so much to the Nebo Education Foundation for making this dream come true and for enriching the education and career training of the SHS Welding students and program!”

Riverview Elementary – Matt Jenkins
“This was such an amazing grant!  I want every student to find joy in reading.  I know that in order to enjoy reading requires finding that magic book that opens the world of reading to students. I have had so many students who come in who "hate reading" only to discover a book that captivates them, and they can't put their book down to go to recess,” stated Matt Jenkins, third-grade teacher at Riverview Elementary. “This grant has allowed me to purchase many high interest books for my students. I was even able to purchase many highly requested books.  I appreciate this so much, because it allows me to try and reach out to every student.  When I told my class this morning, they cheered because I told them the books that I was planning on purchasing. Thank you Nebo Foundation!”

Riverview  Elementary – Kirstie Black
“Thank you so much for providing our class with this amazing grant!  My class's favorite activity is reading, and they celebrated this morning when they heard we were being provided with money to get more books! They've already started making requests of books that they hope to add to our library. I love that this is helping open up conversations between students on which books they love most!” exclaimed Kirstie Black, third-grade teacher at Riverview Elementary. “I'm so grateful to the Nebo Foundation for giving us the opportunity to help more kids appreciate reading.  Having access to books that interest students makes ALL the difference in their willingness to read, and this grant is helping our class cultivate a culture of reading.  I'm so excited to introduce new books to the students and have them share the books with one another.  Thank you, thank you!”

Rees Elementary – Christian Cragun
Christian Cragun, administration intern at Rees Elementary, said, “We at Rees Elementary are so grateful that we have been selected to receive a Nebo Education Foundation grant. We are so pleased that the Foundation is so willing to invest in our students and their education. We will be using the awarded funds to provide an opportunity for our students to plant trees around the school grounds. These trees will be utilized in various science and math lessons across the grades, but will also help us educate our students about the value of taking ownership of their community. Our students have expressed their excitement to help in this project, and it is our hope that they will be able to return years from now to see a physical reminder of the impact they had at Rees.”

Sage Creek Elementary – Lindsey Smith
Lindsey Smith, instructional coach at Sage Creek Elementary, said, “We are so grateful to receive this grant that will help us build our leveled library. With this grant we will be able to purchase books to help kids improve their reading in basic literacy skills, comprehension, and non-fiction comprehension. We are so excited to put these books in the hands of our students and look forward to the impact they will have on them!”

Brockbank Elementary – Robin Martin
“Thank you Nebo Education Foundation for looking after our students that have special needs. This grant will enable us to purchase much needed therapy materials that will be engaging and exciting for our students with special needs. These kids need more than just papers and pencils; they need therapy toys and objects that can be touched, played with but still have a purpose. We are going to have kids begging to come to speech therapy because of all the great therapy material we will have,” stated Robin Martin, speech specialist at Brockbank Elementary.

Cherry Creek Elementary – Kaitlin Aubrey
Kaitlin Aubrey, kindergarten teacher at Cherry Creek Elementary said, “I am beyond THRILLED to receive this generous grant for the purchasing of quality hands-on learning materials. These items are designed specifically for early literacy and numeracy development. During this school year, I have found it particularly difficult to provide my students with hands-on learning materials while still following social distancing protocol. This grant has saved the day. Now my students can keep their hands busy and their brains learning. Many thanks!!”

Mt. Loafer Elementary – Robin Wheatley
Robin Wheatley, kindergarten teacher at Mt. Loafer Elementary, said, “Thank you Nebo Education Foundation for supporting Mt. Loafer Elementary students! Your kindness and generosity is truly appreciated.  It is well known that students benefit from practicing at home the reading skills taught in the classroom.  Having a variety of well-written, high quality books to take home and practice with is so important. This grant will help provide such books for the take home library for students in kindergarten through second grade.”

Springville Junior High – Christene Edenfield
"Thank you so much to the Nebo Education Foundation for the grant to buy Animal Farm for my 9th grade students. Through this book we are able to teach many critical thinking skills, like rhetoric appeals and persuasive writing. I know that these skills are so important and they will use them often as they continue to grow. We have already started reading it as a class, and my students are really invested. It has given us a great opportunity to go cross-curricular with the History dept. Thank you again!" exclaimed Christene Edenfield, English teacher at Springville Junior High.
