Additional October 2020 Grants Given by the Nebo Education Foundation

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

The Nebo Education Foundation board had a large number of grants in October. Here are a few more that received funds to meet the many needs across the district. This Foundation Board functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses as well as fundraisers where all the money goes to educate students in Nebo School District. Thank you to all those that so generously supported Nebo students through donations.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to enrich the lives of students.

Santaquin Elementary – Marlayne Harward
Marlayne Harward, fifth-grade teacher at Santaquin Elementary, said, “We are so grateful for the grant that we received from Nebo Education Foundation for Being a Writer.  We have been sharing one set between three teachers.  Writing can be a  difficult subject to teach. Each student is at their own skill level. It can be overwhelming. These materials  will help us teach all of our students and  help them to improve their writing craft. We are excited to watch them progress. Thank you to all who donate to Nebo Education Foundation! This makes our job easier.”

Barnett Elementary – Amy Nash
“This year has brought so many exciting changes to Barnett Elementary, as well as some learning curves. Blended learning is something that has been on the forefront of all teacher's minds. We are all working hard to develop ways to use technology to drive instruction in our classrooms, along with our traditional methods. This has led to hours in front of webcams, recording our faces and voices. As a faculty, our only tool for this was our class chromebooks, which have very limited functionality. After talking with other teachers at the school, I realized how much more effective we would be if we had webcams installed on our regular desktop computers. This is what led me to go to the Nebo Education Foundation to write a grant. I am so excited to receive this grant and for the opportunity to use our webcams to create digital resources for our students. This is such an integral part of our success, and we thank the Nebo Education Foundation for their generous support!” exclaimed Amy Nash, first-grade teacher at Barnett Elementary.

Salem Hills High – Justin Bills
Justin Bills, music teacher at Salem Hills High said, “Thank you so much for your incredibly generous donation to the Choir Program at Salem Hills High School!

“Just like any other academic class, choir requires textbooks for our material. The big difference with choir is the textbooks are printed copies of music that can cost anywhere from 1.50-4.50 per copy, per song. Considering that each choir can sing up to 10 pieces a year, and there are anywhere from 20-90 people in each of the choirs at Salem Hills, the cost of purchasing this music for the students quickly becomes cost-prohibitive. The donation from our wonderful Nebo Foundation will considerably help offset the costs of purchasing this music for our students, allowing us to stay current in choral music trends, choose music that will meet our educational goals, and obey copyright laws. Especially with the challenging circumstances we currently face due to the worldwide health crisis and economic slowdown, we rely heavily on our amazing community supporters--and we couldn't do it without the Nebo Foundation.”

Salem Elementary – Tori Lewis
“I moved from sixth grade to second grade this year. It has been many years since I have taught in a younger grade. I am so very excited to teach in a younger grade again, and I LOVE teaching reading to younger students. It is inspiring to watch children move from beginning readers to chapter books in one school year. Although I am excited to be in a younger grade again, my 20-year-old classroom library is very worn out and dilapidated. Frankly, the books themselves are looking outdated; the content is generally not current. I’ve been collecting free books from neighbors and retiring teachers all summer, but these books don’t look any newer than mine,” said Tori Lewis. “I will be using this money to buy some new books that will be appealing to second-graders in 2020! I am looking for books that will inspire seven- and eight-year-olds to love reading! I believe this year will be the most important school year of my career. I am anticipating students will come to me with more needs than in years past. My number one goal this coming year is to improve the reading levels of my darling students and these books will help me do this.”
