Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants April 2020

Even during the Coronavirus pandemic, the Nebo Education Foundation met via Zoom  to discuss submitted educational grant proposals for students in Nebo School District. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning.

These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year.  The “Green Fever” tournament was postponed until Monday, August 31, 2020, at Hobble Creek golf course. The foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support projects.

Stacy Nance, president said, “It's exciting to be a part of an organization that improves the learning opportunities for our kids in Nebo School District. With tremendous support of local businesses and giving citizens, the Nebo Education Foundation can provide resources to teachers to enhance the quality of education for our kids in the classroom. Everyone wins when the kids benefit.”

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the minds of students.

Brookside Elementary – Jordyn McNab
Jordyn McNab, a special education teacher at Brookside Elementary said, “Our resource room is so excited to have the resource of these decodeable chapter books! Encouraging a love of reading is difficult in low readers, who often feel like books on their level are too young, and want to be reading chapter books with their peers. By having a diverse collection of accessible reading materials that our students can use both in classroom lessons and for recreational reading, we will not only be able to help them become better readers, but we will also make reading better for them! Providing meaningful intervention in a way that connects them to their peers (reading chapter books is an important milestone for the confidence of a struggling reader!) is a powerful, motivating learning tool and I am so excited to have access to this in my classroom!”

Hobble Creek - Sylvia Williams
“We are very excited to get this grant!. Thank you so much for considering our needs. Folktales are used in the fifth grade, and part of the history they cover is about legends and tall tales in the American culture. This grant will allow for books to be purchased to introduce more legends and tall tales from history. The books will also be used in the library to educate all the students to the many stories available in the folktale genre, specifically legends, tall tales and fables. We are grateful for the funds that will allow us to purchase new books available in this genre,” stated Sylvia Williams, librarian at Hobble Creek Elementary.

Spanish Fork Junior – Jaimie Dannelly
Jaimie Dannelly, an English teacher at Spanish Fork Junior, said, “With this generous donation from the Nebo Education Foundation, our seventh-grade ELA team at Spanish Fork Junior High will be able to purchase three classroom sets of headphone/microphone sets. With this new technology, we will be able to open up a whole new world for our students! Students will be able to create videos, podcasts, and communicate with peers from different classes, different schools, and maybe even different countries! These headphones will allow students to watch a variety of educational videos without disturbing classmates and will also be a major benefit during our end-of-level tests. We have learned about so many amazing educational technology tools during online learning, and we want to continue to enhance our students' educational experience with this technology in the future; these headphones will enable us to do that!”

Spanish Oaks Elementary – Emily Monroe
Emily Monroe, special education teacher at Spanish Oaks, said, “I applied and received a grant to increase my SPIRE decodable reader library. These books go along with our SPIRE program. These are books the students can read independently as we go through each lesson. I teach special education students who struggle with reading and self-confidence. These books will boost their self-confidence, since they can read them independently. It also gives them a whole library of books they can go back to and read for enjoyment on their own. This grant means so much to me and so much to my students. Thank-you for your continued support!”

Salem Elementary – Amanda Houghton
“In our third-grade classrooms here at Salem Elementary, we are fortunate to have one-to-one Chromebook access for our students. Now, we will have quality, long-lasting headphones to pair them with. These headphones will assist in the application of technology into our classrooms, allowing our students to take full advantage of the variety of educational resources our district provides. These programs help us to differentiate student learning. For example, students can utilize the option for text to be read aloud, listen to directions, follow along with our needs-based math and language programs, and more. All of these programs scaffold instruction to meet students needs. Our third graders will benefit greatly from these headphones, and we are so excited to have them available for our students! ” exclaimed Amanda Houghton, third-grade teacher at Salem Elementary.

Park View Elementary – Brittnee Spencer
Brittnee Spencer, a fourth-grade teacher at Park View Elementary said, “Getting this grant from the Nebo Foundation is truly amazing!  We are so grateful to have the funds to expand our leveled library.  This money is going to allow us to buy new sets of guided reading books for our Park View students.  We are so excited to have a new collection of high interest, high quality books to support our students in their reading growth.  It really means a lot to us to have a good selection of books that we can choose from to support student interest while trying to push them to their highest potential as readers.  We honestly can’t thank you enough!”
