Many lucky teachers received grants this month from the Nebo Education Foundation that met this month to discuss educational grants for students in Nebo School District. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning. The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

President Brian Rowley said, “The funds donated by our generous benefactors enable our fine educators to enhance both traditional and technology based methods of teaching.  We could not provide this assistance without the donations we receive from our communities, corporate, and private donations.”

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Springville Junior – Brooke George
Brooke George, Chinese teacher at Springville Junior High, said, “I am so grateful that the Nebo Education Foundation was able to approve my grant for the Chinese Dual Language Immersion Program. With this grant money, we are able to buy additional Chinese books from a great company who has foreign language learners in mind. It is so difficult to find appropriately leveled books for my students, but this company does such a great job. They take familiar stories, such as “The Prince and the Pauper,” “Monkey's Paw and Emma” and rewrite them to happen in China with Chinese characters. The story lines are also adapted to integrate Chinese culture. I love being able to supplement my curriculum with such great teaching tools as it engages my students and allows them to read at a level that is not overwhelming. The company includes plenty of online resources and teaching helps--I am so grateful for those! I am so excited to dive in and help my students learn to read more fluently in their second language. Thank you for your support!”

Payson High – Megan Harbin
“Thank you for your support in helping me to purchase new classroom books! I plan to talk to my English classes in the coming days about specific books and general genres that they would like to see more of in our classroom,” stated Megan Harbin, English teacher at Payson High. “As a reading teacher, I know how important it is for students to find books that they personally enjoy. I am grateful for the opportunity to hand-select new materials for my students so they have more choice in their learning. Thank you again for your generosity!”

Brockbank Elementary – Wendy Dimond
Wendy Dimond, kindergarten teacher at Brockbank Elementary, said, “I  am so excited to be awarded a grant to purchase the Early Social Behavior books for my class and the other two Transitional Kindergarten classes in the district. My students are always working on social behaviors, and this set of books is the perfect set to teach different social skills. There are eleven books in the set, and each one addresses a different subject. They are fun books to read and teach from. I will use these books for years to come helping many students to grow and learn. They will never go out of style and will always be useful in each of our classrooms. Thank you again so very much!!!  YAY!!!”

Riverview Elementary – Sarah Ward
Sarah Ward, instructional coach at Riverview Elementary, said, “Riverview Elementary is thrilled and grateful to receive a grant for decodable readers to add to our library.  The books will be used during small group reading instruction to teach skills-based lessons in phonics.  Teachers can focus instruction on individual skills, then allow students to practice and apply the skill with the use of the decodable text. This resource is valuable as teachers are using more diagnostic data to plan and teach specific skills.  Teachers and students will enjoy this resource in their classrooms.  Thank you!   ”

Springville Junior – Jill Strong
“I wrote this grant to get additional math manipulatives and also to increase the amount of books I have in my classroom. The grant has made it possible to purchase high interest books that my students have requested. It has also enabled us to get more manipulatives in the classroom so   that we can do hands-on math,” stated Jill Strong, resource teacher at Springville Junior High.

Hobble Creek Elementary – Michele Waite
Michele Waite, instructional coach at Hobble Creek Elementary, said, “Hobble Creek Elementary is delighted to receive this grant for decodable readers! Our teachers will be so excited to have this new resource to meet the needs of their students. Decodable readers are texts that are progressive and provide students an opportunity to transfer the skills learned with their explicit phonics instruction. As students practice the skills taught, they can experience immediate success and thereby build reading confidence. We are excited to add these readers to our leveled library. Thank you Nebo Foundation!”

Barnett Elementary – Whitney Coker
Whitney Coker, first-grade teacher at Barnett Elementary, said, “Our grant was to provide each student at Barnett with headphones. It is our goal to incorporate more online practices to enhance and reinforce learning and to better prepare the students for the possibilities of at home learning due to school closures or quarantines. Students will use the headphones for assignments given through google classroom and other platforms. We will use these headphones daily. We are so grateful to the Nebo Education Foundation for approving this grant for our students at Barnett! Thank you so much!”

Foothills Elementary – Elyssa Marzan
“I would like to say a Big Thank You to the Nebo Education Foundation for the grant that was given to the 2nd grade teachers at Foothills Elementary.  We are so grateful to be given this grant and to have it matched by our principal, Mrs. Angela Stoddard.  We are using this grant to purchase a class set of headphones for each of the 2nd grade classes.  We use technology so much these days, and having excellent, quality headphones will really help us as teachers, and help our students in furthering their education.  Again, we couldn't be more grateful for this opportunity to be given this grant so that we can help our students be successful in the best way possible!” stated Elyssa Marzan, teacher at Foothills Elementary.

Congratulations to Jane Wilkins for answering this week's "Where are we Wednesday?" challenge sponsored by Wiggy Wash.
