Athletes Reading and Recess Program

Submitted by ts on
Spanish Fork High Schools Letter Men's Club, lead by counselors Alan Albright and Dawn Anderson, visited Canyon Elementary School's first graders for their ninth annual Reading and Recess Program. The purpose of the program is to allow high school athletes to spend time with the first graders by reading books and doing physical activities. This program gives athletes a way to show the younger students that sports and school go hand in hand. All students that belong to the Letter Men's Club are athletes who play sports while maintaining a high grade point average. After the athletes read the books, they donated the books to each of the five classes. Because the weather has not cooperated the athletes were forced to play inside games such as; Star Wars, Jedi Master, Musical Chairs, and River Jumping. The athletes enjoyed the day as much or more than the first graders. The faculty commented on how impressed they were with the high school athletes and how they handled the first graders. After the reading and recess activities, all the "kids" enjoyed each other's company with a Popsicle treat. It was a perfect ending to a great day!
