Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants January 2021

Nebo Education Foundation board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues, and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

“I feel very fortunate to be able to see the full cycle of how the Nebo Education Foundation is involved in helping the students of Nebo School District. After we receive funds from the community, we review grant proposals from dedicated teachers who have specific classroom needs, then we are able to award a grant to that teacher who uses those resources to enrich the educational experience for our students,” stated Foundation Board Past President Stacy Nance.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Maple Ridge Elementary – Becky Manning
Becky Manning, facilitator at Maple Ridge, said, “Maple Ridge was thrilled to receive this grant from the Nebo Education Foundation! We have been looking at our school data from iReady testing and realized that phonics was an area that we needed to address. In meeting with our instructional coach, we decided that decodable readers to help students work on phonics skills within an actual text was a resource that we wanted to have for teachers to use with students who might need more support in that area. These books will give students additional opportunities to practice applying the phonics skills they have been working on. We believe these books will not only reinforce and solidify their phonetic understanding, but also build their confidence as a reader. Thank you so much to the Nebo Foundation. We truly appreciate your generosity and your support of our school!”

Brockbank Elementary – Michelle Gast
“Thank you so much! We are thrilled to receive this grant for the decodable readers!  These readers will be a valuable asset to our leveled library and will service many students for many years to come!” exclaimed Brockbank Principal Larraine Nelson. “With the increased focus on analyzing data and determining specific reading needs, teachers will be able to use these decodable readers to focus on specific needs of students and apply practice for them through text. The practice of reading with specific phonics objectives designed in the text is what makes these readers so valuable! These readers will help our teachers in focusing on specific needs, save them time,  and will be a wonderful application for students. Thank you so much!”

East Meadows Elementary – Penny McEntire
Penny McEntire, instructional coach at East Meadows Elementary, said, “East Meadows is thrilled to receive a grant for decodable texts. Decodable texts are books that have specific phonics skills in the text of the books. A teacher can teach a skill, then the practice of that skill can be applied in the use of the decodable text. Leveled texts are used with most students in our school; however, there are some students who need additional intervention, and the decodable text provides this for them. We are excited to get these texts in the hands of our learners.  Thank you!”

Salem Junior – Adrianne Miller
“I am so excited to receive the grant from the Nebo Education Foundation, which will be used to purchase an iPad.  The iPad will be used daily, in conjunction with the Notability app, for my lessons. I can upload the bellringer problems, the math notebooks, and any PDF worksheets into Notability. Then I can write notes on the bellringers, show work, and take pictures of student work. These can be uploaded to Canvas, and students who are absent will be able to see what work was done in class. Additionally, I can use math apps such as Desmos and have the freedom to move about the classroom while the students and I are interacting with the app. This will be a great tool and will enhance my effectiveness in the classroom,” stated Adrianne Miller, math teacher at Salem Junior.

Goshen Elementary – Jill Rucker
Jill Rucker, instructional coach at Goshen Elementary, said, “Jumping for joy! That's exactly what I did when I saw the Prize Patrol at Goshen Elementary.  I am so excited to add books to our leveled library that will reinforce the connection between what is taught and what our emergent and early readers are practicing.  These books will also allow students to experience immediate success and the joy of reading independently.  Thank you Nebo Foundation!”

“Thank you for supporting Goshen! We are excited to add the books to our guided library. I know that it will help our students read!” exclaimed Principal DeGraffenried.
