Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants January 2020

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

Nebo Education Foundation board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues, and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

“I feel very fortunate to be able to see the full cycle of how the Nebo Education Foundation is involved in helping the students of Nebo School District. After we receive funds from the community, we review grant proposals from dedicated teachers who have specific classroom needs, then we are able to award a grant to that teacher who uses those resources to enrich the educational experience for our students,” stated Foundation Board President Stacy Nance.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Spanish Fork High – Jesse Roberts
Jesse Roberts, history teacher at Spanish Fork High, said, “Thank you so much for the visit to my class this morning. The grant from the Foundation will allow me to purchase class sets of graphic novels to help teach my students about the Japanese Internment during World War II. After attending a conference on historical literacy, I really wanted an opportunity for my students to experience important events using these resources.  The visual characteristics of these novels allow students more opportunity to analyze and explore their own ideas instead of just repeating what was written by someone else. My students are excited, and I can't wait to see the results! Thanks again to the Foundation for all the work they do to support education in our district and community!”

East Meadows – Penny McEntire
“We are grateful for the generous support of the Nebo Education Foundation. Our teachers and parents are dedicated to helping students achieve reading milestones and this money will support our need for high-quality books, at various reading levels, for our students to take home each evening. Students are highly motivated when they have appropriate, text-level reading material as well as books that are of high interest. This grant will enable us to add to our library to get books in the hands of students. From the 350 students who regularly use this library, we thank you for the gift of literacy!” exclaimed Penny McEntire, literacy coach at East Meadows Elementary.

Larsen Elementary – Karen Leavitt
Karen Leavitt, instructional coach at Larsen Elementary, said, “We are so grateful to the Nebo Foundation for this generous grant! The money will be used to purchase books for our guided reading library.  Many of the books in that library are outdated, worn out beyond repair, and very sad looking. We’re so excited to be able to buy books that will be exciting and motivational for our students to read and our teachers to use in small groups. Every student in our school will have access to these new books. We can't wait to start reading them. Thank you so very much!!”

Salem Elementary – Pam Haney
“Thank you so much to the Nebo Foundation for awarding the grant to my special education class. This money will be used to purchase touchscreen Chromebooks.  Students in my class are using the iReady on-line math program that is part of our new Ready math adoption. Having this on-line curriculum available frees me up to work on critical math skills with individual students while the group is engaged in a meaningful research-based curriculum support. My students were so excited to hear that we were getting new Chromebooks!  We are all very appreciative of this award,” stated Pam Haney, special education teacher at Salem Elementary.

Mapleton Junior – Kelsey Foster
Kelsey Foster, mathematics teacher at Mapleton Junior, said, “In moving up to teach junior high this year, my colleague Rachel Hansen and I realized how beneficial having a scientific calculator can be for our students. I wrote a grant for two class sets of calculators our students could use in class to help us encourage and promote both precision and mathematical reasoning in our students. These calculators have a two-line display that lets kids see their answer and check their accuracy simultaneously. We have been able to use the calculators the last few weeks and I have seen it impact kids who are less likely to participate in class because they are not as fast as their peers. Using a calculator allows those students to be as engaged and involved while avoiding the discouragement they used to feel when they didn't get the answer as quickly as their friends. I am grateful for the Nebo Education Foundation and their commitment to helping teachers and students by matching funds for supplies that immediately impact student learning. Thank You!!”
