Barnett Elementary in Payson, Utah, enthralled the Nebo School Board of Education Board and audience during Wednesday night’s board meeting. Principal Angela Stoddard thanked the Board for the opportunity to showcase some of the learning and talent at Barnett Elementary.

Two sixth-grade students, Emery Christensen and Katelyn Caldwell, delighted the audience with their goal setting through the program WIGS (Wildly Important Goals) program. Some goals were about reading and others were more personal goals. They taught about the four step process in creating goals. All students have accountability partners that they meet with each week to check on each other’s progress. This year, the students have a goal to complete 1,174 reading levels by April 2020.

A School Community Council member, Brea Wentz, discussed the various uses for Trustland funds to enrich student learning. Some of Barnett’s focuses include enriching reading and math, providing more technology, and hiring more technicians to help individual students. Digital coaches are helping teachers use Chromebooks to enhance instruction.

One of the highlights of the evening was when the first, second, and third graders showcased their school leadership song “Don’t Give Up On Me.” The school theme is “I Can and I Am and with our Growth Mindset attitude, we can try new things and accomplish hard things and not give up.” Excellent work Barnett students. Continue to be Nebo Heroes and Discover your Power Within.
