Nebo Students Inspired by RYLA

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

The Spanish Fork Rotary Club sponsored three Nebo School District high school-aged students to attend a three-day conference to learn about leadership and how to develop team-working skills. The conference took place up Provo Canyon at Aspen Grove.

On Tuesday, October 17, 2018, two students, Sydney Ward and Emma Morford, presented to the Spanish Fork Rotary Club about what they learned from the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) conference.

Sydney Ward, student at Salem Hills High, loved meeting new people and developing friendships with other youth. Though everyone is different, Sydney learned from the conference that “we are all equal and all have things to add; everyone has something to teach you. We can support others without giving our own personality traits away.”

Emma Morford, former Payson High student, learned that how we communicate with others can have a powerful impact. Depending on the tone of voice used, including the way something is said, can have a huge effect on the message conveyed. Emma remembered, “One speaker taught us the meaning of the word, Abracadabra. It means ‘we create as we speak.’” It is important to make sure the message we are conveying correctly reflects our intended message.

Guest speakers at the conference included Dean Jackson, Larry Chatterton, Brad Barton, and others. Topics covered at the conference included desire, attitude, personality types, communication, unity, and creativity, among others. Patrons participated in team-building activities, service projects, and group discussions.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) provides youth with opportunities to learn leadership skills and develop lasting relationships with other youth. Rotary is a global network of friends and neighbors with the purpose of providing service, goodwill, and help to those in need.
