Tara Hall, SHS health and physical education teacher, was selected as UAHPERD Teacher of the Year by the Utah Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (UAPHERD). Tara has helped present health curriculum ideas and lesson plans within her district and also at Utah Association UAPHERD conferences. Tara continues to seek opportunities to get ideas from others for new activities that engage students and change behavior. She has received numerous awards, including the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Major of the Year award upon her graduation at BYU. She believes passion, excitement, and respect for your unique human body, as well as for the lifelong health and well-being of students is what creates success both in the classroom and in changing student behaviors. Although she’s the mother of three young children and expecting another this summer, she’s grateful for the opportunity to teach and influence others’ children and considers herself blessed to go to “work” every day, even though it doesn’t feel like work at all. She truly believes it’s what students DO with what they learn in health and PE that is most important. The real “final test results” of high school health and PE will come ten, twenty, and thirty plus years down the road; that’s why she believes what she teaches NOW are the most important lessons they can receive!

Because of Tara’s involvement in sports and other high school clubs and activities, she developed a passion for the spirited atmosphere and experience of a high. She knew she wanted to continue to be part of that environment and culture and so went into teaching knowing she wanted to work at the secondary level. Through her interactions with high school students, she recognized the greater need for application and not just knowledge acquisition; so her journey for more active classroom engagement began and continued to develop as she found she was changing and updating her curriculum almost every year.

Tara Hall is from West Chester, Ohio. In high school, she was a three sport athlete and was very involved in other high school clubs and activities. She graduated from Brigham Young University and has been teaching in Nebo School District for seven years. She was a health and PE teacher at Payson High for six years and recently moved to Springville High School to teach Physical Education full time. Tara earned her Master’s degree in Educational Administration and School Leadership in 2012.
