Nebo School District hosted the State FFA Proficiency Award Judging contests in February at the fairgrounds. This enabled Nebo teachers to participate and not have to travel or miss the regular school day. Last week, SHHS hosted a livestock judging invitational meet in preparation for the state contests at the fairgrounds. This event brought students from St. George to Vernal. There were about 200 participants. The district facilities cooperative agreement with the city has made this possible to the benefit of Nebo students.

Payson High has over 250 top hogs and pigs on site. Nyle and Howard continue to lead out across the state in the production high quality market hogs for their students. This program has given students the ability to see production from breeding to market.  No other chapter in the state has as many students participate in stock shows as Payson High school. Springville High currently houses 36 pigs, 10 lambs, and a poultry unit. The Spanish Fork lab at Maple Mountain which includes Spanish Fork, Maple Mountain, Salem Hills, and Landmark has numerous Pigs and Sheep.

The welding programs invited the local iron workers union to bring their mobile certification lab to the high schools. This lab has 10 collapsible welding booths that students can weld inside. This program allows students to practice the type of welding that is used in the high-end commercial industry. The mobile unit spent the entire day at the high schools, which allowed all students to participate. The certification advisors from the union gave some incredible advice on what students needed to do during and after high school to make it a career.

There are great projects flowing out of the welding programs. All high schools have a running plasma cutter which provides for inexpensive, but highly valued projects. The equipment teaches drafting, layout, and design prior to the final cutting. In addition, many other large scale projects are being fabricated.

All five greenhouses are full and look awesome. Plant sales will begin in two weeks. All schools have 50 to 100 hanging baskets and hundreds of bedding plants and vegetables. Most schools have contracts with businesses for planters and pots.

The Farm Field Days program is under way at Harward Farms in Springville. This program is sponsored twice each year by the Utah Farm Bureau, FFA, and 4-H for second-graders in Utah County. Nebo chapters continue to supply livestock and manpower for the event. These demonstrations help students understand where agricultural products come from.
