PERMISSION TO LEAVE SCHOOL GROUNDS/STUDENT CHECKOUT
When taking your child out of school before dismissal time, please stop at the office and sign the Check-out Log. This may seem like an inconvenience, but it is required so we know, at all times, where our students are. Do not ask your child to meet you by the flag pole, or in front of the school. Students will remain in the office area until an adult signs them out.
If you wish to have your child go home for lunch, please send a note informing the teacher that your child is going home for lunch. (You may call the school secretary if you forget to send a note.)

-Top-

PHONE CALLS
The phones at the school are frequently very busy. We have students wanting to call out, parents wanting to call in, teachers needing to call parents, etc. To reduce congestion of the school phone lines, telephone use is limited to important calls as judged by the teacher or school staff. If students call home, it should be for reasons of illness or other emergencies. Calling home to get permission to go home with a friend is not considered an emergency. Such arrangements should be made prior to coming to school, or after going home.

-Top-

EXCUSING AN ABSENCE
District policy requires parents/guardians to contact the school and provide the reason for the absence. Notification may be by telephone or by a signed note. It is preferable that parents contact the school prior to the absence. Parents should excuse absences within two school days following an absence.

Students who have excessive absences and or tardies will be required to meet with the principal to discuss the problem. Parents/guardians will also be required to attend this meeting. Possible consequences include Truancy Citations and referral to the District Attendance Officer if the problem can't be resolved.

It is very important for children to attend school. Children who miss a lot of school get behind on their school work and become discouraged.

-Top-

DRINKS, CANDY/GUM
We do not allow students to eat candy, chew gum or drink soft drinks in the classrooms or the hallways. However, a teacher on special occasions may make an exception to this rule. These items, except gum which is never allowed, can be eaten in the lunchroom as part of a students' lunch.

-Top-

IMMUNIZATIONS
Utah State Law requires all children enrolled in a public school to complete all required immunizations and have those dates on file before admission to school.
This is particularly relevant to kindergarten and first grade students.

-Top-

MEDICATIONS
It is the policy of the Nebo School District that all medications be administered to children by their parents at home. This policy means that, only under exceptional circumstances, will the secretary or principal give children medication. An Authorization for Student Medication form (JHCD-P1) must be completed and signed by the parent and physician. This form must be updated by the parent and doctor each year.

Tylenol or "over-the-counter" medications may be given to a child at school only after verbal confirmation or written permission from a parent has been given to a school official. Never send any medicine with a child to school. Children should never keep medication on themselves or in their backpacks! An adult should bring all medications including herbal medications to the office.

MONEY & VALUABLES
Teachers cannot be responsible for a student's money and valuables. Therefore, we discourage students bringing pocket money to school, except for those times when there is a specific purpose (book orders, lunch money, picture money, etc.).
When you do send money, either cash or check, to school with your child, please send it in a sealed envelope with the following information on the outside:

1. Your child's name
2. Your child's teacher's name
3.What the money is intended for
4. Amount of money enclosed

Valuables such as jewelry, radios, Walkmans, toys, trading cards of all types, etc., should be kept at home. Students' cubbies and desks are not secure places. The school assumes no responsibility for damage or theft.

-Top-

BICYCLES/SCOOTER/SKATEBOARDS/ROLLER BLADES
All bicycles are to be put in the bike rack when arriving at school. Scooters,. Roller blades, and skateboards are to be stored in classrooms (scooters need to be folded). These items are not to be used during school hours. Students are to walk their bikes, scooters, and skateboards while on the school grounds and at the crosswalks. The school will not assume any responsibility for damage or theft of these items

-Top-

LOST & FOUND ITEMS
To help return lost articles of clothing, etc., please put your child's name on everything he or she brings to school. When a student finds an item it should be turned into the office. Lost articles that are not claimed by the last day of school in May will be donated to a charitable organization.

-Top-

BIRTHDAY TREATS
Utah State Department of Health regulations (R392-100-2 food care) prohibit the serving of homemade treats to children at school. The regulation states:
Food shall be obtained from sources that comply with all laws relating to food and food labeling. Home prepared foods are prohibited. If treats are brought to school for activities such as birthday treats, class parties, special rewards, etc., they should be commercially prepared items preferable individually wrapped in cellophane paper, a box, etc.
It is certainly not required or expected that you send treats to school. However, if you choose to do so, we would greatly appreciate your following these guidelines so that we will be in compliance with Utah State Department of Health regulations.

-Top-

DRESS STANDARDS
Nebo School District's dress standards are as follows:

Clothing shall be modest, neat, clean, in good repair and shall include shoes. Modesty shall include covering shoulders, midriff and back. Short shorts, tank tops, halter, crop tops, or belly shirts, extremely short skirts or dresses do not meet the modesty standards in our schools. Hats and caps shall not be worn during regular school hours."

We have had difficulty in previous years with students wearing short shorts to school. If your child will place their hands down by their sides with their shoulders relaxed, their shorts should be lower than their finger tips. If they are not, students will be asked to call home and have their parents bring a more suitable article of clothing to wear.

Because certain fads and extremes of dress, hair styling and color, tend to attract improper attention to the individual and sometimes interfere with the normal educational process, all students are expected to conform to the standards of dress outlined above.

-Top-

COUSINS AT SCHOOL
Occasionally out-of-town cousins or friends visit during the school year. According to Nebo School District Policy, only students enrolled in our school are permitted to attend. Please do not ask us to make an exception, you are asking us to break school district policy.

-Top-

NUISANCE and/or DANGEROUS ITEMS
Any item in the possession of a child that causes a disturbance at school, or is potentially dangerous will be taken by the teacher. These items will generally be returned at the end of the day. However, in the case of dangerous items or repeated offenses, items will be taken to the office and returned only to the parent.

-Top-

RECESS and PROPER DRESS
Children should arrive at school dressed for the weather of the day so they can safely and comfortably enjoy recesses - this especially includes the winter months. It is expected that all healthy children will go out for recess except under extreme conditions. A note from home is needed for anyone who needs to stay inside the school during recess time.

-Top-

MAJOR DISASTERS
In the event of a major disaster affecting the entire community, students will be held at school. All teachers and staff members will also remain at school to care for the students. Unless otherwise notified, we will release students only to responsible adults or family members. Our first option for a meeting area if the school is not safe is the lawn area behind the school. Our second option will be to meet at the park. The third option will be to meet at the bicentennial park near the high school

KSL Radio AM 1160 is our Emergency Broadcast System. It will announce when the school is closed due to inclement weather, etc.

-Top-

EARTHQUAKES
Since earthquakes strike without warning, it is critical that students take directions from the teacher immediately. Please become familiar with the the following:

1. Teachers will direct students to get away from the windows and ask them to get under a desk or table. (Duck, Cover and Hold) If a teacher is not in the room, the students should take this action on their own.

2. Classes should evacuate the building after the earthquake is over. Caution should be used when leaving the building because parts of the building could still fall.

3. Teachers should remember to take first aid kits, cell phones, radios, and check out sheets outside, when evacuating.

4. After the students have exited teh building, they should walk with their teacher ot the open playground area found on the west side of the building. (Students are not to exit on the north side of teh building!)

5. Do not return to the building for any reason until it has been declared safe by the proper officials.

6. Teachers are to check attendance after vacating the building and report as instructed by the principal.

7. Students will remain with the teacher until a parent/guardian (showing proprer I.D.) picks up their student. It is District Policy that student are not to be release, in an earthquake or other emergency situations, to return home on their own.

Special Note: Parents do not try to pick up students on the North side of the building. We have electrial power lines and gas lines on that side of the building.

Periodically some students choose not to follow our school rules. These students will receive verbal reminders and/or warnings, lose valued time and privileges, receive in-class or in-school suspension, and/or participate in student/parent/prin-cipal conference or Skill Building. For severe or repeated infractions, the principal may work with parents to coordinate an out-of-school suspension for a period of time.

SERIOUS OFFENSES

Our philosophy is that teachers must be able to teach, and students must be able to learn. The following rules are serious enough that when they are broken, parents will be notified and students may also be temporarily suspended from school and/or activities.

Safe School Violations - arson, burglary, stealing, battery (fighting and/or a punch connecting with someone else's body), criminal mischief, intimidation, verbal abuse (swearing, foul language and any inappropriate language and gestures), illegal activities, leaving school grounds without permission and possessing weapons or facsimiles.

Violations of the Drug and Alcohol/Tobacco Policy

Sexual Harassment Violations - This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
* derogatory or offensive jokes, teasing, or comments of a sexual nature
* graphic remarks or sexual comments about an individual's body
* sexually suggestive or obscene telephone calls, letters, notes or invitation
* sexually suggestive or obscene pictures, cartoons, posters, or objects
* grabbing, pinching, or touching of private areas
* deliberate cornering, shouldering or bumping in hallways
* sexual gestures, unwanted pats, or hugs, or any unwanted touching
* any form of sexual threat, intimidation, or exploitation
* spreading of sexual rumors
* actual or attempted sexual assault, molestation, or rape
* sexist remarks or gender-based stereotyping
* pantsing male or female students, flipping up girls' dresses, etc.

Parents will be notified by phone when misbehavior is of a serious nature. If necessary, a meeting will be set up with the parents, the student, the teacher or the principal to discuss appropriate measures to help students change their behaviors. Suggestions may include, but are not limited to counseling, Skill Building, loss of school privileges, parent conferences or parent attendance at school, transfer to an alternative class or placement, or out of school suspension and home counseling. Actions determined to be criminal will be reported to the Pupil Services Department and/or law enforcement authorities.
All students are entitled to appropriate due process in all matters of school discipline and students will not be questioned by law enforcement officers without the permission of a parent.

Our main goal is to teach students proper respect for authority and property, to foster good citizenship and to promote high personal standards of courtesy, decency, morality, clean language, honesty, and wholesome relationships with others.

Special Note: Students will be disciplined in a manner that takes into consideration disabilities or other problems they may have.
