Extended School Year (ESY)

Nebo School District has an Extended School Year (ESY) program for students who fall under the category of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Extended school year services are special education services that are provided to students with disabilities: The characteristics of ESY are (a) beyond the normal school year, (b) in accordance with the student's IEP, (c) at no cost to the parents of the student, and (d) meet the standards of the Utah State Office of Education. Nebo considers all disabled students for ESY services. ESY services are provided only if a student's IEP team determines, on an individual basis through the IEP process, that the services are necessary for the provision of a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to the student. A student is eligible for ESY services when the IEP team determines that without ESY services, the educational program would be of little or no benefit to the child because of the amount of regression that would take place over the summer and the amount of time necessary to recoup those lost skills. The type, amount, and duration of the services are determined on an individual basis. The purpose of ESY is to maintain current skills, not to teach new skills. Services are not limited to a particular category of disability. The ESY program usually consists of students exhibiting one or more of the following:

  1. They are medically fragile.
  2. They have severe physical limitations.
  3. Their mental capabilities may or may not be limited.
  4. They may be non verbal or have limited ability to communicate.
  5. They may be requiring extensive behavior modification interventions (LRBI)* to succeed in the school environment.
  6. They are being taught functional life skills.
  7. The IEP team in your school should also consider eligibility based on achievement or non achievement of current IEP goals.

*LRBI = Least Restrictive Behavioral Interventions
