Information about Nebo School District Preschool Program

What is Special Education Preschool?

The Nebo District Special Education program provides services for students ages 3 to 5 years old who are found to have a disability under the Federal IDEA law.

Services

Services available depend on the needs of the student but can include: speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, vision therapy, and early intervention therapy.

Placement options

Possible placement options for special services include:

  • Preschool two to four days
  • Homebound Services (for medically fragile students)
  • Title I Preschool (available for some title I school catchment areas)
  • Headstart
  • Autism Classroom
  • Internet/Consultation Services

Benefits of early intervention services

After nearly 50 years of research, there is evidence -- both quantitative (data based) and qualitative (reports of parents and teachers) -- that early intervention increases developmental and educational gains for the child, improves the functioning of the family, and reaps long-term benefits for society.

Early intervention has been shown to result in the child: (a) needing fewer special education and other habilitative services later in life; (b) being retained in grade less often; and (c) in some cases being indistinguishable from nonhandicapped classmates years after intervention.

How Is a Child Determined to Have a Disability?

Comprehensive testing is conducted at no cost to the parents, when there are concerns in one or more of the following areas:

Cognitive Development

Physical/Motor Development

Language/Speech Development

Social/Emotional Development

Self-Help Skills/Adaptive Behavior

Qualification

The child may qualify for Special Education services if he or she scores at below the 7 th percentile in one or more of the above categories.

Action

  • Parents can call Oakridge School at 491-2165 to schedule a hearing/visions screening and complete the paperwork.
  • The preschool coordinator will contact parents to schedule the rest of the assessment at the testing center at Barnett Elementary.
  • Students will be assessed by a team of professionals. Each team may include: speech therapist, early childhood special education teacher, L.E.A. (Local Education Authority), Preschool Coordinator and a Psychologist, depending on the areas of suspected disability.
A young child is no longer simply a child: he or she is a preschooler, poised at the starting gate in the race of life. - - Neil Kurshan

Preschool students at Sage Creek Elementary get a chance to interact with some horned toads during an Extended School Year (ESY) class.
