Shannon Williams - Special Education Teacher

I was born in California, but spent most of my years growing up in Arizona.
I received my Associate Degree from Ricks College in Speech Pathology and
Audiology and my Bachelor's degree from AZ State in Special Education. In
1983 we moved to Utah and I began teaching at Spanish Fork Jr. High until
1989. I later went back to work part-time as a Parent Infant Advisor for
the School for the Deaf and Blind. and a Deaf-Blind specialist for the state
of Utah. I had the wonderful opportunity to be on the ground floor in
developing the Intervener program (which was a lifelong dream of mine).
After taking several more years off to be with my 4 children, I returned to
teaching at the Spanish Fork High School and am presently teaching at Salem
Hills High School. I have loved every job that I have had and have learned
so many things from the great people and students I have been able to work
with. My new love is inntegrating technology into the Special Education
classroom. It has been exciting to watch how these tools have helped our
students become more successful in the classroom.

I grew up in Cedar City, Utah, as Ruth Humphrey. There, I worked for my Dad at the Arctic Circle from the time I was 10 years old until I was 23, with a year and a half break for a LDS mission to Montreal, Canada. I graduated from SUU in 1976, with a BS in Social Work and a minor in Psychology. I worked at the Developmental Center in American Fork as an Attendant and then a Program Instructor. In April of 1977, I was married to Steven Wilder. Over the next twelve years we became the parents of six children, two sons and four daughters. During that time I did day care in my home and attended BYU where I received my ElEd Certification in 1987. I worked as a para-educator at Canyon Crest Elementary in Provo. As part of my duties there, I was the art and music specialist for the five self-contained classes. With the birth of my sixth child, I once again became a daycare provided, and continued in this work for the next six years. In 1995, I was employed at Mountainland Head Start as a Family Service Specialist and I remained there for six years. Then, I renewed my ElEd Certificate, substitute taught for one year, was a para-educator at Foothill Elementary in an Autistic Unit, received my Special Ed. License from BYU, and now here I am at Payson Jr. High working with the coolest kids in the world.
