Service-Learning/ Peer Leadership class is a great opportunity for students to be involved in school, community, and world-wide service which relates to a school learning such as English, math, science, art, etc. This is also an opportunity to be a leader in our school by deciding the dance themes and making the decorations, by creating assemblies, doing fund-raisers, spirit weeks and red ribbon month.

Each student in this class is required to do one service-learning project of his/her choice. This project can be spear-headed alone or with one or two other people. Some of the projects that we did last year were:

  • Senior Citizen’s Center - Each month our class made decorations for the holidays. In return for our service, we are able to learn from them about some of those who served in WWII. (Related to history and art)
  • Red Ribbon Month -- We planned the month and activities to help our student-body to be a part of Red Ribbon Month to help drug prevention. One of our really fun traditions is to spell a word on the grass using the students to stand in the letters. Then a hot air balloon sponsored by Bank of American Fork goes up and takes pictures of our students.
  • “Make a Wish” -- We worked with the high school at their fair to help raise money and we granted one to grant 2 people a wish.
  • Ghana Bracelets -- Using beads made in Ghana, we made bracelets and sold them for money which went back to an orphanage in Ghana. We partnered with Grant School.
  • Humanitarian Center -- Each year we travel to SLC, learn about the world needs, tie quilts, sanitation kits, education kits, baby kits, etc.
  • Forest Service -- Each year we have partnered with the Forest Service to either make new trails, build fences, clean graffiti off rock walls, build retaining walls, and last year we planted 200 trees. We have learned many things about saving the environment (science) and also the history of our area.
  • School Fund Raisers -- Helping coordinate school wide fund raisers. The money raised goes for a school wide improvement project. Past projects included: auditorium sound system and outside lunch room tables.

These are just a few of our projects. Some projects are repeated yearly and some are only a one time experience. We love serving in our community and applying our knowledge as we work.
