INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
18403CONCERT BAND- (2 Semesters - 1.0 Credit)
18404Band members will rehearse all types of band music, perform public concerts and compete in the region festival to qualify for the state festival. Membership in this group is required in order to audition for Jazz Band. (Grades 10,11,12)
18552MARCHING BAND- (1 Semester - 0.5 credit)
Auditions for this group are during the first week of May. You must be registered for Concert Band to be a member of Marching Band. Members will meet for summer band and perform in local parades. A band camp will be held in August before school starts. The camp is required. During school, the class will be held early morning for the first Semester. 9th graders will catch the bus to the junior high after early morning rehearsal. The band will compete in several competitions in the fall and go on tour in the spring. (Grades 9,10,11,12)
18572COLOR GUARD- (1 Semester - 0.5 Credit)
AUDITIONS FOR COLOR GUARD ARE HELD IN APRIL. A week-long workshop will be held before auditions. We will work on color guard fundamentals as well as the field show routines. The color guard has the option of competing in winter guard competitions against other high school color guards. We will travel with the marching band to all parades and on tour. (Grades 9,10,11,12)
18453JAZZ BAND- (2 Semesters - 1.0 Credit)
18454You must be a registered member of Concert Band for membership in this group. The Jazz band will perform at public concerts, compete in Jazz festivals and compete in the Region Jazz Festival in March to qualify for the State Jazz Festival in April. (Grades 10,11,12)
18603ORCHESTRA- ( 2 Semesters - 1.0 Credit)
18604Orchestra students will rehearse and perform all types of music for string orchestra and symphony orchestra. They will perform public concerts and compete in the region festival to qualify for the state festival. Individual practice is emphasized. Students are required to rent or own their own instruments. Students must be enrolled for the full year to participate in the Orchestra Tour in the spring. (Grades 10,11,12)
18703PHILHARMONIC STRINGS- (2 Semesters - 1.0 Credit)
18704Philharmonic Strings is a non-audition class for string orchestra instrumentalists. Students will rehearse and perform all types of music for string orchestra and symphony (full) orchestra. Public concerts, region competition to qualify for state festival, and participation in Spring tour are part of the curriculum. Individual practice is emphasized. Prerequisite: You must register for the entire year–no 2 Semester registration only. (Grades 10,11,12)
18753CHAMBER ORCHESTRA- (2 Semesters - 1.0 Credit)
18754Chamber Orchestra is a class for a select group of string musicians. Audition is required. Students will rehearse and perform all types of music for string orchestra. Public concerts and region competition to qualify for state festival are part of the curriculum. Individual practice is emphasized. Students are required to provide their own concert attire: Long black dress for girls, black tuxedo for boys. (Grades 10,11,12)
18903GUITAR- (2 Semesters - 1.0 credit)
18904This class helps fill the Fine Arts requirement. In this class, students will learn to read music. We will learn chords, notes, finger picking and play both solos and group songs. Students must provide their own guitars. This course cannot be repeated. (Grades 10,11,12)
18803MUSIC THEORY WITH ADVANCED PLACEMENT OPTION- (2 Semesters - 1.0 credit)
18804A college course in music theory. This class is designed to prepare students to pass the Music Advanced Placement test in the spring. In the class we will cover music fundamentals, chord and scale theory, meter, time signatures, intervals, harmonization, sight singing, composition, ear training, and score and interpretations. The class can also be taken for UVSC concurrent enrollment credit. (Grades 10,11,12)
