Wrestling Guidelines

 

REGION ACTIVITY CHAIRPERSON: Lynn Gerratt

1.           The starting date for wrestling practice is November 5, 2007.

 

2.           The first match of the year cannot be held prior to November 20, 2007.

 

3.           Region matches will be held on Wednesdays or Thursdays.  Starting times for Region IV matches will be as follows:

 

         a.  Weigh-In                                 4:30 p.m. (one hour weigh-ins)   

         b.  Gyms Cleared                         4:30 p.m.          

         c.  Junior Varsity Matches           5:45 p.m.                       

         d.  Varsity Matches                      7:00 p.m.

 

             The gym must be cleared of all other activities by 4:30 p.m.  A change in starting time will require mutual agreement between the principals of the two schools involved.  Changes in date of activities requires the approval of the Region IV Board of Managers. Host schools are responsible to notify the arbiter of any time or date changes.

 

4.           The NFHS rulebook will be followed for all rules, including weight classes, weight control, weigh-ins, tournament scoring and every other situation unless otherwise directed by the UHSAA.

 

a.      There is to be no weight allowance given, unless there are dual matches on consecutive days.  A coach must contact the opposing coach 24 hours in advance, if this situation occurs.  A one pound allowance is the maximum authorized.

 

b.      All wrestlers will be restricted to the number of credits or contacts determined by the UHSAA.  A match is defined as being any time a wrestler goes onto the mat, regardless of the length of the match, even if it is to accept a forfeit.  (The State Board of Directors has ruled that all team tournaments count as three (3) matches).  Region and State Tournaments are not included in this limit.

 

c.      The officials for all Region and practice matches will be assigned by the state arbiter for Varsity, Junior Varsity and Sophomore meets.  All officials must be certified.         

 

d.      Moratorium:

         November 22 - 24, 2007

         December 22 - 26, 2007

         January 1, 2008

 

5.           Region Tournament Guidelines:

 

a.      Coaches will turn in weight verification as per UHSAA and NFHS guidelines to the Region Tournament Director at the Open Tournament.

 

b.      The Region Wrestling Tournament will be an eight man bracket that is scored according to NFHS rules. There is a possibility to enter two (2) wrestlers from each school per weight class.  The top 2 or more JV wrestlers at the open tournament qualify to participate in the Region Tournament.

 

c.      Those who qualify for the Region Tournament will be the varsity wrestler and the top 2 or more JV placers at the Open Tournament.  JV wrestlers will be seeded if they meet the following criteria.  JV wrestler beats a varsity wrestler in a head to head competition.  (DQ and injury default do not count).  JV wrestlers will be seeded according to where they finished in the open tournament unless the above criteria are met.  Seeding information must be turned in at the Open Tournament.

 

         The following criteria will be used for seeding:

         1.  Head to head region record

         2.  Head to head outside region

         3.  Region record, wins at that weight

         4.  Common opponents

         5.  State placer

         6.  Region placer           

         7.  Overall varsity record

         8.  Coin Flip

 

         Once a tie is broken between 3 or more wrestlers the remaining seeds will be determined by going back to criteria #1.  Byes will be equaled out at he Region seeding meeting before the seeding starts.

 

d.      Hosting rotation for the tournament:        

         2008      American Fork

         2009      Spanish Fork

         2010      Pleasant Grove

         2011      Lehi

         2012      Lone Peak

         2013      Timpanogos

 

e.      There will be wrestle-backs for a true 4th place and a non-scoring match for 5th and 6th place to determine the alternate for the state tournament.  Furthermore, the wrestler who is the alternate should be directed to remain in shape until the state meet begins, in case he is asked to compete.  If a school has an injured wrestler, who is unable to compete in the state meet, the school must notify the Region Chairman immediately so a replacement can be provided.

 

f.       A hospitality room for the Region Tournament will be subsidized by the Region for an          amount not to exceed $350.

 

g.      The open tournament will be hosted by the school that hosts the varsity tournament the following year.  The tournament will be seeded as far as is possible.  All non-varsity wrestlers from region schools will be eligible to participate.  The tournament will be double elimination for all participants.  A true second will be wrestled if the second place finisher has not beaten the third place finisher in the tournament.

 

6.           Region Wrestling Awards:

         Region IV will present one trophy to the school winning the Region IV Wrestling Tournament.  Medals will be given to the first four places in each weight class.

 

         Academic All-Region will be awarded before the finals of the Region Tournament.  The          criteria for the award is; any wrestler who wrestlers in the Region Tournament with a 3.7          GPA.  Names must be submitted to the Region Tournament Director at the seeding          meeting.  The certificates will be prepared by the host school.
