Proposed Boundary Adjustment for Santaquin Elementary Schools
Due to construction and anticipated opening of the new Apple Valley Elementary School in Santaquin, a boundary adjustment is being considered to accommodate growth and help balance student populations beginning with the 2018-2019 school year.
Residents of Santaquin are invited to offer input on the proposed boundary options. The boundary adjustment options, information, and a comment form will be posted on this site from December 1 through December 15.
The information below is designed to provide information about the boundary realignment process and the options the district is considering. Your input, ideas, and suggestions are important to us. Please use the information below to learn more and provide important feedback regarding the boundary options being considered.
Q: Why is a boundary change being considered?
A: A boundary change is being considered because a new school, Apple Valley Elementary, is being built on the north side of Santaquin. The anticipated opening date of Apple Valley Elementary is the fall of 2018. A boundary adjustment will not only allow for the opening of the new school, but will also help manage student growth and balance student populations in Santaquin Elementary, Orchard Hills Elementary and Apple Valley Elementary.
Q: What is the process and timeline for determining boundaries?
A: Two boundary options have been developed by district staff and area principals that meet the criteria (mentioned below) for creating new school boundaries. These options, and the accompanying information, will be posted online from December 1 through December 15. An open house will also be held by district staff and local principals at Santaquin Elementary School on Thursday, Dec. 14, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. At the open house, patrons will have the opportunity to discuss the boundary options being considered. Following the open house and a period of public feedback through an online survey, Nebo School Board members will review a summary report of feedback received at a public hearing on January 10, 2018. Current plans are for the boundaries to be finalized on February 7, 2018.
PLEASE NOTE: The boundary information presented on our website will be the same information presented at the open house. Since ideas, concerns, and suggestions can be given through the online survey, patrons do not need to attend the open house to give input.
Q: What factors are considered in establishing boundaries?
A: Many factors are considered when creating new school boundaries including, but not limited to the following: feedback from parents, long-term implications, natural and man-made borders, Open Enrollment law, feasibility and functionality, student safety, cost, and future potential growth.
Q: Will students be able to enroll in the school of their choice through Open Enrollment?
A: Open Enrollment applications will be accepted from December 1, 2017 to February 16, 2018. Students who wish to apply for an Open Enrollment permit can visit the Nebo District website, www.nebo.edu/information/open_enrollment, for an application and more information regarding the open enrollment process.
PLEASE NOTE: Apple Valley Elementary will initially be closed to open enrollment until student enrollment numbers have stabilized.
Q: What happens to the input I submit through the survey?
A: District staff will carefully review the feedback provided. As a result of input received, adjustments or changes to the proposed boundaries may occur. The Board will receive a copy of every response submitted through the survey. In summary, every single response will be reviewed and considered. A final report of feedback received as well as a boundary recommendation will be reviewed by the Board of Education before a final decision is made regarding boundaries.
Q: Who will qualify for busing under each boundary option?
A: Once new boundaries are established, the District’s Transportation Department will begin to establish busing routes for all schools involved. The state of Utah requires that busing be provided for elementary students who live 1.5 miles or more from school. Busing eligibility for students who are not directly affected by a boundary change would remain the same. Students on an Open Enrollment permit do not qualify for busing except through a space available option (limited availability depending on location). If you have any questions regarding busing eligibility, please feel free to contact Nebo School District’s Transportation Department at 801-465-6005.
Boundary Options (Maps, Enrollment, and Considerations)
On the following pages, you can view maps for each of the boundary options for Santaquin, Orchard Hills, and Apple Valley Elementary Schools. For each option, the map colors delineate the proposed boundary area for each proposal. Both proposals qualify for approval after a review of the factors mentioned above (predicted enrollment numbers, future growth, parent/guardian input, etc.).
We prefer that feedback be submitted through the survey page on our website, www.nebo.edu. If you would like to provide additional feedback, are having difficulty completing the survey, or accessing information, please send an e-mail to email@example.com and we will respond to you as soon as possible
THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT AND FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF NEBO SCHOOL DISTRICT!
