Ken Garff Reading Program
Park School is happy to announce that we are one of the lucky school selected to be a
Ken Garff Road to Success school! Ken Garff, along with several other sponsors are encouraging students throughout Utah to become better readers by reading 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.

Here’s how it works:

  • Four (4) bikes are going to be given away at the end of the school year to your school.
  • Read with your child for 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week.
  • Every 100 minutes your student reads enters their name into the drawing for one of the bikes.  The more your student reads, the better their chances.
  • Teachers will collect the reading minutes from students once a week.
  • Students can track their reading minutes at home.
  • Every student will receive several reading reminders and incentives (pencil, pencil sharpener, magnet, wristband, eraser, ruler, and bookmark) during the school year.

Reading for at least 20 minutes a day is a win- win situation.  Not only will it increase your student’s chances of winning a great new bike, but as reading minutes go up, reading skills improve.  Take
time to read – today!

Healthy Lifestyle Challenge
Fruit and Veggie Challenge—November 2008

The challenge: Eat at least a total of 5 fruits and/or vegetables most days of the week for a total of
18 days in November.
To be successful remember:
1) Decide what fruits and vegetables you enjoy and will eat.
2) Buy your fruits and vegetables—good nutrition starts at the supermarket (unless you have canned them).
3) Plan on having at least one fruit and/or vegetable at each meal.
4) Consider a fruit or vegetable as a snack each day.
5) Try not to drink more than one serving of fruit juice a day—fruit juices are loaded with calories
and sugar.

Here is a link where you can download the calendar each month if you lose it. The calendar is
under the Fruit and Veggie Challenge and is titled Check off Calendar.

Mighty Authors
Make you own books at home.  Your child’s school partnered with Mightyauthors.com to make
writing together as a family fun and easy.  Watch for more information and the “secret code” you
will need to access your Mightyauthor account.  It will be coming home in the next few weeks with
your child.
