Rachel's Challenge a Huge Success -- Answer to Wednesday's Challenge

Rachel’s Challenge was a huge success. Students from both Springville High and Maple Mountain High had the opportunity to participate in 60 minute assemblies where they learned about Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine High School shootings back on April 20, 1999. Over 100 students were then trained for 90 more minutes on the particular aspects of creating a “Chain Reaction” for good. Rachel’s Challenge provided a culminating event the evening of October 1, for a packed auditorium of parents and families for the surrounding communities.

Rachel Scott was an avid writer and wanted to become a famous writer some day. One of her favorite writers was Anne Frank. Some of Rachel’s written ideals included the following five ideas.
1.    Find the BEST in others
2.    Dream Big – write down goals & keep a journal
3.    Choose positive influences
4.    Speak with kindness
5.    Start your own “Chain Reaction”

Rachel’s Challenge is FOR kindness, compassion, respect, helping others, and reaching out. After working with the students in two assemblies and then the 90 minute student leader training, presenter Patrick Kassab told the students and later the parents that he was impressed that two rival schools could come together with such unity.

Rachel’s Challenge came to these two high school’s because of the passion of Maple Mountain’s Student Body President, Kayla Ellis. Kayla attended this training a few years ago and stated, “It changed my life!” She wanted not only her fellow students at Maple Mountain High to attend and be trained, but also other schools so the students could benefit from the positive message too.

Even with all of Kayla’s passion, the training and community event would not have been possible without the financial support of the Live wElle Foundation. The Live wElle Foundation produces a 5K Run on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend each year to help fund worthwhile educational programs. This Live wElle 5K Run is enthusiastically supported by the community of Springville and Mapleton. The foundation founders, Scott and Kirsten Hullinger give all the credit to the many people that support the Live wElle 5K Run.

Winner of the Wednesday challenge is Scott Griffin.
