SALEM HILLS STUDENTS WILL REPRESENT UTAH AT INTERNATIONAL ENVIROTHON COMPETITION IN SELINSGROVE, PENNSYLVANIA

ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah – Salem Hills High School students McKay Trotter, McKenna Jaussi, Bryece Trotter, Elizabeth Haun and McCrea Malkovich won the opportunity to represent Utah at the Canon Envirothon in Pennsylvania this summer.  The team participated against 18 other high school teams in the Utah Envirothon held in Zion National Park in April.

The rigorous competition included an oral presentation on a current issue and testing at soils, wildlife, aquatics, forestry and current issue stations.  They were accompanied to the competition by science teacher Brad Shuler, who helped prepare them for the competition over the past several months.

The students will now prepare to compete against teams from around the United States and Canada at the Canon Envirothon on July 22-28 in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania at Susquehanna University campus. The Canon Envirothon is North America’s largest high school environmental competition, where generous scholarships and awards are presented to top teams and individuals.

The Envirothon will continue to test the  five-member Salem Hills team by  testing their knowledge of the state’s natural resources – soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife and a current environmental issue. This year’s current issue at the Utah Envirothon was non-point source pollution and low-impact development. For more information about the Utah Envirothon, visit www.utahenvirothon.org.

The Utah Envirothon is sponsored by the Utah Association of Conservation Districts, with the following major financial contributors:  Rocky Mountain Power, USU Water Quality Extension, Utah Division of Water Quality, Utah Conservation Commission, Campbell Scientific and Utah Farm Bureau.  Technical experts and volunteers are provided by the major federal and state conservation organizations. This is the 15th anniversary of the Utah Envirothon, and the 25th anniversary of the Canon Envirothon.
