Mr. Dave Harlan, principal of Canyon Elementary, spoke to the Nebo School Board of Education and stated that they are making great Cougar tracks. Mr. Harlan said, “I want to thank our community, patrons, and parents for their strong support. We have the highest percentage of PTA members at Canyon. Canyon has a strong and dedicated staff, and we enjoy a collaborative culture at Canyon.”

Principal Harlan also introduced the combined orchestra from Canyon and East Meadows. Students from both elementary schools have been practicing together in the early morning for the past two months. The combined, early morning orchestra were amazing and were complimented by the Nebo School Board of Education in their November meeting.

Joey Payne, School Community Council (SCC) member at Canyon Elementary, addressed the Nebo School Board and spoke on how the SCC has provided more involvement with the Trustland funds, school improvement plan, and making the school a safer and more creative learning environment.

The council has enhanced Canyon learning environment by bringing in guests like Brandon Mule, author of the Fablehaven series. The council has also implemented the Rad Kids after-school program for third-grade students. The Rad Kids teach children self-defense skills as well as prevention in bullying.

After thorough study and supervision of the west crosswalk,  the council decided to close the west crosswalk for children. The SCC provided safer walking routes and communicated these the first week of school.

Positive-based incentive programs are a popular program among the students. The students can earn as a group or individually rewards such as foosball, basketball, and PlayStation times.

Joey said, “School Community Council continues to have a positive effect on Canyon Elementary, and we are proud to serve our children through this program.”
