Mary Rice, language arts and English Second Language (ESL) teacher at Springville Junior High, was honored with an Outstanding Professional Service Award from the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN).

The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents is an independent assembly of National Council of Teachers of English. ALAN is made up of teachers, authors, librarians, publishers, teacher-educators and their students, and others who are particularly interested in the area of young adult literature. ALAN, which is self-governing, holds its annual meetings during the NCTE annual convention, and publishes The ALAN Review.

Mary’s service to the organization includes representing ALAN at the Utah Council of Teachers of English (UCTE), reviewing literature for the ALAN website, publishing articles about the use of adolescent literature in school curriculum, and promoting partnerships with other local organizations and groups.

Mary, along with other honorees, will be recognized at the annual ALAN breakfast in Chicago, Illinois this November.

Anyone who is interested in knowing more about ALAN can visit http://www.alan-ya.org.
