Helping a student with Seizure Disorder access a general education is a cooperative effort between the school, parents, and student. The following lists provide suggestions to help a student with Seizure Disorder access a general education.

School responsibilities and accommodations:

  • Establish a good working relationship with the parent/guardian
  • Provide some type of student seizure disorder identification (i.e. card, wristband)
  • Provide seizure training to capable and willing school personnel
  • Provide back-up training to additional school personnel who will assist the student when primary person is not available or to assist the student when participating in an alternate school activity
  • Make sure all seizure related medications are available to the student as agreed upon by school and parent, and in accordance with doctor’s order
  • Provide for safe storage of medication
  • Some students may need additional assistance to help them keep up with classmates, assistance can include adaptations in classroom instruction
  • School personnel should work with parents in monitoring the effectiveness of medication as well as side effects. Parents are to be contacted if student’s physical or intellectual skills seem to change

Parent involvement:

  • Insure all seizure related material and medications are made available to trained school personnel
  • Provide emergency contact information for parents/guardians and other responsible individuals so the school can contact these individuals reguarding seizure-related questions and/or during emergencies. If an emergency arises and emergency contacts cannot be reached, the school will contact trained medical personnel who may determine the student be transported to a medical facility for additional medical treatment, any related expenses are the responsibility of parent/guardian
  • Provide a written description of the student’s health needs while attending school, including authorizations for the administration of medication with instructions for emergency treatment, signed by the student’s health care provider
  • Provide an adequate supply of the student’s medication, in pharmacy-labeled containers, replacing medications and supplies as needed
  • Educate the student to develop age-appropriate self-management skills
  • To help keep the lines of communication open between home and school
  • Participate in the development of a school plan to implement appropriate accommodations to assist the student in academic and health needs

Student self-management strategies and responsibilities:

  • Notify adults about concerns or needs in managing seizure symptoms
  • Participate in the care and management of the seizure disorder as appropriate to the student’s developmental level
  • Cooperate with school personnel and parents/guardian in relationship to accommodations and health procedures

Guidelines to assist student during a seizure:

  • Avoid restraining the student during the seizure
  • Help the student to a lying position and place something flat and soft, such as a pillow under the student’s head
  • Loosen restrictive clothing and remove student’s glasses
  • Turn the student’s head to the side and provide an open airway
  • Never put anything in the student’s mouth
  • Time the duration of the seizure and inform the paramedics when they arrive
  • After the seizure subsides, reassure the student by telling him/her that they are all right, give the student knowledge of the time and place, and inform the student that they have had a seizure.
  • Protect the student from embarrassment by asking onlookers to give the student some space, perhaps by announcing a break
  • Immediately contact parent/legal guardian
