Scholarship Honoring a Fabulous Teacher–Karen Anderson

The Nebo Education Foundation will be honoring a fabulous teacher–Karen Anderson by offering a scholarship to graduating senior students.

Hundreds of children were met each day by the captivating smile of Mrs. Karen Anderson. One of Mrs. Anderson’s greatest loves was to teach first-grade children how to read. She loved to see the "light" come on when the symbols on the page became real words and opened an entirely new world to a young mind.

Karen began her teaching career in Goshen. She then taught preschool in her home for many years. She taught in Washington State, and locally in Nebo School District at Park and Larsen Elementary Schools. Mrs. Anderson earned a Master’s Degree in reading and then worked in the Nebo School District as a reading specialist to help other teachers become "master" teachers.

Mrs. Anderson’s influence was not only felt in the schools with young children, but also by her family, her community, and in her church service. It is said that each person we come in contact with leaves something of themselves behind in our hearts. Karen was a person who only left good.

Karen was taken from us much too early. She fought valiantly a rare form of lung cancer for three years. She passed away in 2009. One of Karen’s hardest days, after she found out about her cancer, was the first day of school. How she wanted to be there with the children.

A scholarship has been set up this year through the Nebo Education Foundation in memory of Karen. We can’t give back to Karen, but we can give on in her name. This scholarship will help another student prepare to touch young minds as an educator and as a teacher.

If you have been influenced by Karen Anderson, or any other wonderful teacher, please consider donating any amount in her honor to Nebo Education Foundation. Send donations to: Nebo Education Foundation/Karen Anderson, 350 South Main, Spanish Fork, UT 84660.
