January 2020 Nebo PEAK Award Winners

THE PEAK AWARD CUSTOMER SERVICE PROGRAM
Nebo School District wants to showcase our Positive Energy and Kind employees. PEAK Awards are nominated by patrons and recognized by the Superintendent Staff and Nebo School Board of Education. The award is administered by the Communications and Community Relations Department.

Alex Minson, Teacher, Spanish Fork High
Nominated by: Leslie Swenson

“Alex does such a great job working with our intervention students. He holds them accountable, but never discourages students. Students are able to develop a trusting relationship with him. Alex refers students to counselors if he feels like their needs are not being met, or if they need special attention. Alex is flexible and easy to work with. He will do whatever is asked of him. We are so glad to have Alex at our school!

“Last spring as we were creating the master schedule, some of my teachers were murmuring about inclusion classes. He stepped up and volunteered to teach all of the inclusion classes in that department this year! That is unheard of!!!”

Jennell Arce, Teacher, Westside Elementary
Nominated by: Andrew Lovell

“Jennell started off a few years back volunteering her mornings acting as our school crossing guard. She always greeted students with a warm smile and provided safety to hundreds of young children on a daily basis. Jennell earned her place as our sixth-grade Spanish Dual Immersion teacher and worked harder than any teacher. She also took on the role as the advisor for our school’s student council where she has inspired dozens of bright minds to become leaders as they prepare to enter the junior high. Jennell is thoughtful, caring, and has a genuine love and concern for each of her students. Moreover, when you get to know Jennell, she makes you feel like you are part of her family. I am very blessed to have such a high quality teacher as my partner in crime.”

Karalee Beckstead, Facilitator, Larsen Elementary
Nominated by: Cami Thomas

“Karalee is a very fun and positive person to be around. She brings so much laughter and fun to each day. Karalee is also an extremely hard worker and a dedicated employee. She spends way more time at school than is expected, just to make sure that other employees are ready and well prepared in their respective jobs. She is very knowledgeable in helping new teachers prepare and feel successful as they begin their first few years of teaching. She brings out the best in others with her encouraging words and her positive outlook. Karalee also steps in to complete many tasks that have little to do with her specific job assignment--and does so happily. Karalee is a great asset to Larsen, and we are lucky to have her!”

Gayle Openshaw, Bus Driver, Transportation
Nominated by: Chelsea Rowley

“I had the opportunity to ride on Gayle's bus for a field trip to the pumpkin patch. Her bus was SO clean! She went over safety before leaving, and her bus had small inspirational quotes and cartoons taped inside for the kids to read. I was so impressed by the care she put into her job. The kids got mud, hay, and corn all over her spotless bus. I apologized as we exited, and she smiled and said it was no problem. I have no doubt it's just as shiny to pick up her regular route today! Gayle is a keeper, and I hope she knows she is a valuable member of the Nebo School District's team.”

Loura Martin, Secretary, Wilson Elementary
Nominated by: Emily Wright

“Mrs. Martin is always the kindest person to talk to on the phone when calling the school. She has also shown a caring side to the students at the school when they have a problem. My daughter recently had a minor accident at school. Mrs. Martin checked on her to make sure she was okay and to see if she needed anything. That’s just one instance that has stood out to me. She is always going above and beyond. I just really appreciate her.”

Hilary Miner, Custodian, Mapleton Junior
Nominated by: Mary Erekson & Jeff Peterson

“Hilary shows kindness and compassion by how she interacts with her staff. She especially has been very kind to a special needs young man who works with her. She is patient with her staff and doesn't mind showing her sweepers, a number of times how to do a particular job. Whenever I see Hilary, she has a smile on her face and a kind word to share. Hilary has a positive energy about her.” ~Mary Erekson

“My son accidently threw one of his shoes high enough to land on the floating ceiling. We asked Hilary if there was any way to get the shoe down. She cheerfully said she thought her ladder might reach, and she eagerly went to get it, despite all the other work she was scheduled to get done. In less than an hour, my son had his shoe back. I was genuinely surprised at how happily and willingly Hilary helped. My son has no connection to the school whatsoever, and it was completely his fault the shoe got stuck. Hilary actually, genuinely made us feel like we were doing her a favor by giving her the chance to serve us. We had never met her before. But she smiled the whole time we were with her. Hilary went above and beyond her job duty and truly exceeded our expectations.” ~Jeff Peterson

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This initiative is designed to focus on "raising the bar" on providing exceptional customer service, both internally and externally. A key component of this initiative is the development of the PEAK Award. The PEAK (Positive Energy and Kindness) Award is presented monthly to someone in the Nebo School District who "really gets it" when it comes to providing exceptional customer service, which in turn results in positive impacts on everyone including students, parents, co-workers and members of the community.

Who Gets Nominated?
Faculty and staff members are nominated by anyone in the community through the Nebo School District website, www.nebo.edu/PEAK wherein a special Customer Service link is provided. The directions as to how to nominate an employee for the PEAK Awards are clearly spelled out on the site. All nominations must include information on how the individual has provided exceptional customer service, as well as how the employee's actions impacted the nominator's overall perception of Nebo School District Schools. The name and contact information of the nominator must be included.
