Nebo Education Foundation Gives Additional Grants October 2019

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District.  Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need.  Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.

“That’s what the foundation is all about – to give our students the best educational opportunities possible through classroom grants,” said Lana Hiskey, executive director.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the lives of students.

Springville Junior – Brooke George
“Receiving the Nebo Education Foundation grant means I will be able to provide authentic examples of Chinese language usage for my students. A class library of Chinese texts will enrich my students’ language learning experience by capturing student interest, increasing exposure to high frequency characters, and by providing challenging material. Books have always meant so much to me and I know it will benefit our students greatly. Thank you so much!" exclaimed Brooke George, Chinese teacher at Springville Junior.

Maple Ridge – Morgan Stokes
Morgan Stokes, first-grade teacher at Maple Ridge said, “Thank you so much to the Nebo Education Foundation for funding my grant!! In trying to integrate the use of technology in first grade classrooms for various learning and intervention activities, many of those activities require headphones in order for students to fully participate in and enjoy what they are doing. In writing the grant, I asked for headphones that had microphones for our first grade students to use in the classroom and in our school computer lab. It is difficult to afford headphones that are high quality, simple for students to use and sturdy to last through the years. With this grant, I will be able to purchase headphones that will benefit over 100 first grade students as they successfully participate in and complete various learning activities on our iPads, Chromebooks and computers in our lab! The first grade teachers and students at Maple Ridge are so excited and so grateful for the generosity shown to us by the foundation. Thank you!!”

Mapleton Elementary – Emily Blaisdell
Emily Blaisdell, fourth-grade teacher at Mapleton Elementary, said, “We are so grateful to the Foundation for granting us the funds necessary to purchase a new class set of one of our favorite novels, Bud, Not Buddy.  Each year, the fourth graders read Bud, Not Buddy as a whole class novel shared reading experience.  Over the past six years, our current set of books has been well-loved and needed to be replaced. Bud, Not Buddy is a highlight of the year for all of our students and with our new set of hardback books, we look forward to enjoying this fantastic story with our fourth grade classes for years to come.  We are also grateful to our principal, Mrs. Peery, for supporting our grant with matching funds.”

Sage Creek Elementary – Erica Murdoch
“Sage Creek second grade classes are thrilled to have been awarded funds from the Nebo Foundation to use for the purchase of headphones. Through other funding, all of our classes have six iPads, and now we will have headphones to use in conjunction with them. Headphones will enable our students to use our math and reading software, Lexia and I-Ready, without disrupting other students. Because the headphones also have microphones, our students can record explanations to math problems they solve, as well as create videos and other original content. We are so grateful for the support of the Nebo Foundation,” stated Erica Murdoch, second-grade teacher at Sage Creek Elementary.

Mapleton Junior – Brittany Lundell
Brittany Lundell, special education teacher at Mapleton Junior, said, “I am so so grateful for the  opportunity I have now to provide my students with two new iPad pads and two new Apple pens. Because my students have such unique learning styles and differences having access to technology will help bring the real world to them in a non-traditional way. Helping my students to be able to have the ability to better their job skills through the use of technology will help them be able to get the skills they need to obtain jobs. Some of my students rely on iPads to be better so source of communication so now because of the help from the Nebo foundation I will be able to accomplish multiple goals and one of them is to continue to help differentiate and give my students the same opportunities that others have. Thanks so much!”
