Nebo District High School Seniors performed with the Utah Symphony in their annual All-Star Evening at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City.

The evening featured mostly high school senior students from nine youth symphonies from throughout the state joining in a side-by-side performance of major works.  Seven students from Nebo School District were selected for this program including Tyson Jones, bass from Salem Hills High, Beau Bayless, trombone from Spanish Fork High, Leah Mason, clarinet from Payson High, Braden Ferrin, violin from Springville High,  Emily Wood, viola from Springville High, Gordon Hapairai, violin from Payson High, and Julia Evans, violin from Payson High.

Nebo students attended rehearsals on evenings and weekends at a very busy time of year and also enjoyed master classes and mentoring from Utah Symphony members in preparation for this challenging program. The students performed two movements from Capriccio Espagnol by Rimskky-Korsakov, two movements from Symphony No. 5 in D minor by Shostakovich and ended the concert with the Danse Bacchanale from Samson et Delilah by Saint-Saens.  The event was coordinated by Beverly Hawkins of the Utah Symphony Education Department.

Nebo’s All-Star students are honor members of the Nebo Youth Philharmonic Orchestra sponsored by Nebo School District and directed by Paul Wells, Salem Hills High; Clint Roberts, Spanish Fork High; and Julie Christofferson, district specialist, Nebo School District.

The Utah Symphony All-Star Evening is sponsored by the Utah Symphony and co-sponsored by the Sorenson LEGACY Foundation and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Foundation. Part of the program featured the Utah Symphony playing the Opera Béatrice et Bénédict by Hector Berlioz followed by the Viola Concerto performing Opus 12 by Gyula David, which featured soloist, Miriam Wagstaff, a 16-year-old violist from Tropic, Utah. The All-Star Evening was conducted by Rei Hotoda, Associate Conductor--and first female conductor--of the Utah Symphony.
