Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants February 2016

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

The Nebo Education Foundation board met this month to discuss the grants submitted by Nebo School District teachers and fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning.

The Nebo Education Foundation is composed of 20 volunteer board members who live in cities serviced by Nebo School District.  Board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students.  Many of the donations received are for selected projects, yet a substantial amount is available for the greatest need. Greatest need monies are considered for grants submitted by area schools.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Spanish Fork High–Andrew Hunsaker
Andy Hunsaker, drama teacher at Spanish Fork High, said, “Thanks so much for all you do for Nebo Teachers! Our Masks have made a difference in the DEEP connection to acting, and it's effect on the student actors at Spanish Fork High School. Libby Appel created a theory of character development based on the use of the grotesque and neutral mask. It helps the young actor understand that they can confront the unknown, and feel free to create a personality and by ‘covering, the actor truly uncovers’. With the use of the masks, we are able to explore and dive into things that are impossible without the tools you are providing. Students look forward to this unit, which helps them understand the curriculum in the most hyper sense of learning possible.”

Payson Junior – Tom Rather
“Thank you for your generosity and consideration for this grant. It will truly mean a great deal to my students. It is difficult to buy specific books that accommodate students interests and specific reading levels. It takes money! The special education teachers here at Payson Junior High School appreciate this grant. I am sure the students will also,” stated Tom Rather, special education teacher at Payson Junior.

Salem Elementary – Becky Hooley
Becky Hooley, second-grade teacher at Salem Elementary said, “Thank you for the grant. It will be used for a grow light so that we can grow geraniums for Mother's day. I will also be able to purchase an incubator to hatch chicks.  My students will have the opportunity to watch life happen. I am thankful for this grant; because it not only will benefit my students this year, it will also benefit students for many years to come. Thank you again.”

Spring Lake Elementary – Susan Crook
“I am so thankful for the grant I received from the Nebo Foundation for the iPad Air.  Technology is so needed in the classroom.  I plan to use AirServer in the classroom with the iPad which allows students to see me model any subject using the iPad from anywhere in the classroom,” stated Susan Crook, sixth-grade teacher at Spring Lake Elementary.

Diamond Fork Junior–Daniel Bigler & Sherrie Dunford
Daniel Bigler and Sherrie Dunford, teachers at Diamond Fork Junior, stated, “This grant will provide much needed stands for the band and orchestra. We often don't have enough stands for each student to be able to hold up their music in class while they play. Students often have to share at moments when sharing a stand creates difficulty seeing the director or playing their part. The current stands that we have are 20+ years old and are damaged. Thank you so much for the ability to get new stands that will hopefully last many years and improve the playing time for all students involved in band and orchestra directly and dramatically during that time.”
