Nebo Education Foundation Gives Grants November 2015

Nebo Education Foundation board members meet each month to review and award grant requests, consider fund-raising avenues, and other items that advance the educational opportunities for Nebo School District students. The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Foothills Elementary – Gabrielle Wilson
Gabrielle said, “I have received a grant through the Nebo Foundations to receive headphones for a listening station during my literacy group. The headphones that will be provided will be put to great use every day. A listening station will greatly benefit my students because they will be able to listen to great reading which will improve their own reading fluency and listening comprehension. I am excited to have a listening station in my classroom so that I can engage my students in powerful, exciting literacy that they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to. Thanks again, Nebo Foundation!”

Mt. Loafer Elementary – Leslie Ewell
“I was so pleased to receive a grant from the Nebo Education Foundation.  The guided reading resource I am purchasing will give the teachers at our school materials to dive into numerous nonfiction genres.  They will provide leveled short texts to use in guided reading, helping students to experience many types of nonfiction writing and allowing teachers to deepen comprehension.  I believe that this resource will impact many students for years to come.  Again, I am so grateful to the Nebo Education Foundation for providing a way for us to purchase this resource for our students at Mt. Loafer,” stated Leslie Ewell.

Salem Junior – Tiersa Ward
Tiersa said, “I am so thankful for the grant that was given to me and my department. This grant will help provide fiction and nonfiction books for our eighth-grade English students at Salem Junior High. In the past, we didn't have enough books for students to have their own personal copy, so students had to read a class copy of a book and had to read it during class. Now, students can have their own book to take home and read. This is a great benefit for them because we now have more time in the classroom to discuss the books instead of using class time to read. It means so much that the Nebo Foundation is willing and able to help provide materials for our students that unfortunately we can't always provide as teachers or as a school. Thank you!”

Spring Lake Elementary – Denise Ray
“Thank You so much for granting the technology grant for an iPad.  My students and I will be using this throughout the day between math, science and reading.  I will be using the application for running records on a daily basis.  The iPad will not tie me to my computer at the back of the room. I will be able to roam around the room, help students, and students will also be using the iPad while connected to the server and using the document camera.  This will help me serve my students better in math, reading and other subjects,” stated Denise Ray.

Spring Lake Elementary – Ben Atkin
Ben said, “This iPad will help with reading in the classroom. Using apps like Raz-kids, students can read books on their reading level. There are many ways this will help student achievement. Students can use it to help them in art with an app called masterpiece by Osmo that can take a picture. Then it outlines so the student can learn to draw it. We use an Air server in the classroom enabling students to show their strategies when working out math problems, individually or as a group to the class. Students can tell stories by using Adobe Voice. The students can include pictures, music, etc. I am also implementing Google Classroom this year. It will be another resource that students can use to do assignments instead of doing them in the computer lab, which is often booked up, or at home, which some students do not have computers at home.”

Mapleton Elementary – Thresa Holthaus
“We are thrilled with the grant we received today from the Nebo Education Foundation. The money will go towards purchasing eight more Chromebooks for our sixth-grade classes. Sixth-grade students use Chromebooks frequently throughout the day for anything from math differentiation activities and computer coding, to research and writing on various topics. This money allows us to double the number of Chromebooks we were going to purchase for our sixth grade. We so much appreciate both the donors as well as the Foundation for being careful stewards of money donated in determining how best to meet the most critical needs of our students in Nebo District,” stated Principal Julie Peery.

Mapleton Junior – Lori Marett
Lori said, “This grant from the Nebo Foundation will provide a great resource for both teachers and students to connect content area material with real world concerns. I ordered three classroom subscriptions to various Scholastic magazines.  These magazines provide current, interactive information to our students.  Along with the physical magazine comes an interactive website that students can log into as well.  Already, I have had several teachers come and ask for the magazines.  English, science, social studies, and geography teachers are currently using them in their classroom.  In addition to having these collections available, I also type up the table of contents for each magazine on a Google Document so that each teacher has ready access to the each magazine’s content.  It has been an amazing addition to our regular curriculum.  Both teachers and students are excited about having access to this pertinent and current information. After keeping the magazines in the library collection, the classroom sets are then given to individual teachers to use permanently in their classrooms.  I am grateful for the Nebo Foundation’s help in getting this great resource for our school.”

Springville Junior – Lindsey Shepherd
“My students and I are extremely excited to have this grant so we can buy calculators for our classroom! Without calculators, students have had to spend a lot of time doing busy work to complete calculations such as long division and multiplication out by hand. These calculators will eliminate that wasted time so we can have more time to focus on new concepts!” exclaimed Lindsey Shepherd.

Brockbank Elementary – Janae Wilson
Janae said, “Thank you Nebo Education Foundation for helping our upper grades purchase Nonfiction Leveled Guided Reading Short Reads!  These nonfiction cards are designed to benefit upper-grade Guided Reading Levels (Levels M - Z) and will give the fourth- through sixth-grade teachers at Brockbank more materials to explore many nonfiction genres including: brochure excerpts, newspaper articles, letters, book reviews, almanac excerpts, magazine articles, and memoirs. We are excited that so many students will benefit this year and in the years to come! We are very appreciative how the Nebo Education Foundation supports our students! Thanks again!”

Canyon Elementary – Jeanette Maughan
“Canyon Elementary was thrilled to receive a visit from several members of the Nebo Foundation awarding us the grant we had requested. This money will be used to purchase books on CD for first and second graders to listen to during their reading time.  While the teacher is working with small groups of students, the other students in the class are busy with other Literacy activities.  One of these activities can now be listening to books on CD. This will encourage a lifelong love of books. There is a multitude of picture books on CD available that the students can follow along with the text.  This is enjoyable for children, but also helps them develop fluency and their own reading skills. Mr. Harlan, our principal, set aside $500 for this and the Nebo Foundation doubled it making it possible for us to get $1,000 worth of books on CD for our first and second graders to use. Thank you very much!” exclaimed Jeanette Maughan.

Rees Elementary – Dixie Spresser
Dixie said, “I am so grateful to have received this grant!  The money will be used to buy MP3 players and headphones that will be used to put my books that are on tape or cd onto them. The MP3 players will have just one book on them at a time.  Each of the MP3 players along with the corresponding book and a headset will be placed into an individualized bag. I will be training my students how to use them so that they will be able to go get a bag independently and to listen and follow along with the book.  I feel that this will help my students with literacy and independence.  Literacy is so important to the growth of our students.  Thank you for approving the grant!”

East Meadows – Shandy McQuivey, Natalie Mecham, Suzanne Aguero, Penny McEntire
“Thank you for the grant to Salem Pond.  In years past, this has been one of the students’ favorite field trip. The students have done experiments, created a small wetland, learned about pollution and how if affects this habitat, and discovered why ducks don't get cold in the water all day.  We appreciate the opportunity to continue visiting this local landmark!” stated the East Meadows third-grade teachers.
