September 17, 2015, Nebo hosted yet another successful Special Education Extravaganza for all special needs children from the junior high schools in Nebo School District.  The organizers and coordinators of the event are Coach Linda Lewis and special education teacher, Jo Edan Parker. The event provided a day of sports and fair activities for nearly 225 students.

Approximately 100 special needs children were escorted through 14 events by 135 peer tutors from each of the junior high schools.  These students are dedicated to service learning. They directed carnival type events along with a few track and field activities. Some of the events included face painting, fishing for prizes, gunny sack races, decorating maracas, ring toss, target toss, etc. They were also able to compete in two of the following: high jump, 100 meter race, softball throw, or the running long jump.

After participating in each of the events various students were awarded medals for their accomplishments.  Each participant went home a winner as they all received prizes and a t-shirt that said, “X-Marks the spot.”  This quote symbolizes Nebo’s Superintendent Rick Nielsen’s vision and theme presented to all teachers at the beginning of this year.

Coach Lewis said, “This is truly one of the most successful activities these students will be involved in during the year. Thank you to Diamond Fork Junior High (the host school), principal Troy Petersen, PE teacher Miss Kacey Larsen and her second and third period PE classes, as well as all those who served as peer tutors.  What goes on at the extravaganza will linger in the hearts for all those involved for many years to come.”

Congratulations to Sarah Blackhurst for winning this week’s “Where are we Wednesday?” challenge.
