Eighty-one special education students in junior highs throughout Nebo School District gathered at Mapleton Junior High on Wednesday, October 7th to participate in the 3rd Annual Sports Spectacular. This year’s event brought 230 staff members, peer tutors and participants together to participate in the 10 events that took place throughout the day. Linda Lewis and JoEdan Parker, directors, have been planning and organizing the event for the past few months. “This event is great for both the peer tutors and the participants,” said Parker. “The participants love the competitions and the tutors have the awesome opportunity for serving and caring for others.” Participants can take part in all activities but choose two of the activities to compete in. The boys and girls are then scored in the activities and are awarded 1st and 2nd prize buttons for winning the competitions. Each participant also receives a participation button as well as a t-shirt. “The kids are all so cute and fun,” said Lindsey Bagley, a peer tutor at Mapleton Junior High. “They all try so hard to do their best. It is awesome to be a part of.” Two local businesses helped donate items for this year’s event. Rocky’s Car Care donated balloons and Gandolfo’s donated sandwiches for the staff. “We are so appreciative of everyone who helps out with this event,” said Parker. “It is a lot of fun for everyone who participates.”
