Nebo School Board of Education recognized JoEden Parker and Carl Swenson as Huntsman Award for Excellence in Education recipients for 2013. JoEden Parker is a special education teacher at Mapleton Junior High and Carl Swenson is a Payson Junior High Principal. Both were recognized at a banquet last month and given a check for $10,000. Nominations for this award are made by parents, colleagues, or students. The Huntsman committee makes the final selections.

In the minds of parents and colleagues, Miss Jo Edan Parker has one of the hardest jobs in Nebo School District. She is a special education teacher for the severe behavioral students. At Mapleton Junior High, Jo Edan works with a unique and challenging group of young children from all over Nebo School District and all have severe intellectual and behavioral challenges. These students’ needs are diverse and complex. Working with these students requires highly specialized training, patience, and perseverance. For more information on Miss JoEden Parker go to http://www.nebo.edu/news/1095.

Principal Swenson continues to challenge students and faculty to step out of their comfort zone and dare to do more. He holds true to the high level of trust that has been place in him to lead Payson Junior High. Effective school research continues to validate that the single most effective person to foster student achievement and outcome is the classroom teacher followed directly by the building principal. For more information on Mr. Swenson go to http://www.nebo.edu/news/1094.
