Nebo Athletic Hall of Fame - SHS 1990 3A Baseball State Champions - Answer Wednesday's Challenge

The 1990 Springville High School Baseball team was one of the most outstanding teams ever to represent Springville High School in any sport.  This team not only had many outstanding athletes, they also had a chemistry with one another that set them apart from other teams.  Many of these men served missions, attended college, are raising families, and are now enjoying very successful careers.

In the spring of 1990, this team had a final record of 23 and 3. They won the Region 8 Championship with a record of 9 and 1 and were undefeated in the 3A State Tournament play.  During the Baseball State Tournament, they defeated six teams in a row. Springville scored 49 runs while only giving up 3 runs. In the last four games against Dixie, Spanish Fork, West, and Bountiful, Springville pitchers threw shutouts and the Championship game was a 17 to 0 rout over Bountiful. The coach of Alta High School, who was the State 4A Champions, told the Springville coaches that they were glad they didn’t have to play the Red Devils!  The newspaper stated, “Never has a team dominated a state tournament in this fashion.” 

This team went on to place three players on the All-State First Team, and two players tied for All-State MVP honors. One player was an Academic All-State selection. Seven players were selected for the All-Region 8 team. Another four players who were juniors and sophomores on this team were All-State selections during their senior years. Six players went on to play college baseball, while one player went onto play professional baseball.

Coach Clements would like to thank these players and coaches not only for their accomplishments on the diamond but for the way in which they have represented Springville High School.  He is most proud of the good husbands, fathers, and citizens they have become; and it is an honor to call them friends.
