Spring Lake Students Wins Contest -- Answer to Where are we Wednesday

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

Lillian Spieth, a third-grade student at Spring Lake, received $1,000 as the winner of the Utah State Cabbage Growing Contest. Mr. and Mrs. Terrell from Bonnie Plants; Larry Lewis, a representative from the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food; and Leonard Blackham, the Utah State Commissioner of Agriculture and Food, presented the $1,000 check to Lillian in a school assembly.

Each year Bonnie Plants sends out thousands of cabbage starter plants to third-grade students across the nation. The students plant and care for their cabbages throughout the summer and then take a picture with the end result. Each teacher then chooses a class winner and submits it to Bonnie Plants. This program was implemented back in 2002 to encourage young people to develop a love for gardening and cultivate a better understanding of agriculture.

Lillian’s cabbage weighed a whopping 50.5 pounds! She plans on putting the $1,000 in a savings account for her college education.

Winner of this week’s Where are we Wednesday is Principal Frank Daybell at Taylor Elementary.
