Teachers Selected to Attend Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute

Jenn Sorenson and Deana Coates, fifth-grade teachers at Park Elementary, and Kelly Cole, Honors U.S. History at Diamond Fork Junior, were selected as grant recipients to participate in the Summer 2013 Field Study with Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute and sponsored by Driven 2 Teach.

The Driven 2 Teach program takes teachers out of the classroom and to the very places where history happened. The honored teachers travel there so they can teach history here. This experiences then elevate and enhance history for their students.

In 2007, Larry H. Miller had a conversation with American author and historian, David McCullough, about their passion for history and a shared concern over how to foster better teaching and greater learning in the classroom. That inspired dialogue would ultimately lead Larry H. Miller to develop a program to help teachers improve the way history is taught in our schools.

Gail Miller has continued the work her late husband started in supporting history education throughout the state by sponsoring these field studies. With the help of Zions Bank, these seminars are made available to K-12 teachers in the state of Utah.

Mrs. Sorenson, Mrs. Coates, and Miss Cole have the unique opportunity to experience hands-on history while being taught by university professors and professional educators. We are excited for Mrs. Sorenson, Mrs. Coates, and Miss Cole and know that they will have very rewarding experiences, which in turn will greatly benefit their students.

Congratulations Jenn Sorenson and Mrs. Coates at Park Elementary for making “It Shine”.
