SHS Celebrates Constitution Day

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

Constitution Day, September 17, is traditionally celebrated in Utah by the Utah Bar Association inviting members of the Bar to visit public school classrooms to talk about different aspects of the Constitution. Mr. Glenn Bird, a Springville High School Government and AP United States History teacher, received the news two weeks ago that Federal District Judge for Utah, Dee V. Benson, would visit his 4th period AP US History class on Constitution Day this year.

Judge Benson spoke for the entire class period and held the attention of the students extremely well. He spoke of his life before becoming a Judge and then responded to many questions about his tenure as a judge. Principal Mike Brown presented Judge Benson a Red Devil hat which the Judge appreciated very much.

Judge Dee V. Benson commenced his career in government service as Counsel for the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Later, he was Chief of Staff for Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah; and in 1987, he was a Counsel in the Iran-Contra Congressional Investigating Committee. Judge Benson was later nominated by President George H.W. Bush in 1991, to fill the newly-created position of a federal judge to the United States District Court for the District of Utah. He continues in this position today.

Thank you, Judge Benson, for taking time to educate our students!
