Garden Party Planned to Celebrate Success of At-Risk Youth in Developing a Community Garden

Students at Landmark High School in Nebo School District have spent months completing the installation and planting of a garden that will serve the needs of the community, and will host a garden party on June 28, 2012, to celebrate its completion.

Landmark High School serves as the alternative high school for students in the Nebo School District area.  Students who attended Landmark High School in the 2011-12 school year had the opportunity to enroll in a floriculture and greenhouse management class and help with the setup of the new school greenhouse.  Students then started working on growing vegetable and bedding plants which were marketed to the community.

Mark VanWaggoner, the school greenhouse coordinator, had students attending his summer school class complete the installation of raised bed garden boxes, which students have planted with vegetable starts from the greenhouse.  The school plans to use vegetables from the garden to serve the needs of local community members.

Plans are also in the works for Landmark High School to expand its agriculture program this fall, by offering a full schedule of agricultural classes, and my completing the installation of an on-site food and clothing donation center.

Parents, the public, and media are invited to join members of the faculty and students involved in the project at an open house garden party on June 28, 2012, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Landmark High School Garden.  The high school is located at 612 South Main Street, in Spanish Fork.  This event will include dinner and allow guests to gain information on how the Landmark High School Agriculture Department is helping prepare students for lifelong success.
