Nebo Education Foundation Delivers

Submitted by lana.hiskey on

The Nebo Education Foundation meets the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 a.m. to discuss submitted educational grants for students in Nebo School District. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning. The Nebo Education Foundation functions through generous donations made by individuals and businesses.

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Salem Hills High – Justin Bills
“Thank you Nebo Education Foundation Board!  It is impossible to overstate my gratitude for the Nebo Foundation’s approval of my recent grant request. Your donation will be used to add and build variety into our school's choral music library. Your donation, matched by parents’ donations, will give us the necessary funds to purchase music for performances this year. The music will be checked out to students in the Salem Hills Choirs and used for rehearsal and performance. We are also building a broad and varied music library to provide for future choral directors and choir students at Salem Hills. This will make the lifetime of the new music longer. On behalf of the entire Salem Hills choral department, I thank you again for your willingness to support the advancement of music education in our schools. It means so much to me that the foundation and our community prize the arts as part of a well-rounded arts education.  We are blessed as a choir program, a school, and a district to have such a supportive foundation,” stated Justin Bills, choir teacher at Salem Hills High.

Art City – Pamela Knowles
“Thank you so much for this grant! This iPad will be used every hour of every day to benefit the speech students at Art City Elementary! Speech students have a wide variety of goals ranging from speech sounds to fluency issues to receptive and expressive language targets. The iPad has numerous applications that allow hands-on instruction in each of these areas. The new core requires students to be able to use technology and with the iPad. The students will have more opportunities to work with the latest technology. Now, when I go out to the classrooms to meet with the students, I won't have to bring along a huge bag full of materials. They can all fit nicely on the iPad! This will be an effective speech tool for many years to come! Thank you so much,” expressed Pam Knowles, speech and language teacher at Art City Elementary.

Salem Hills High – T.J. Brindley, Terry Krieger-James, and Steve Haskell
“I am excited to use the iPad in my classroom to enhance my teaching abilities and help the students learn.  I plan on using the iPad in the following ways: To assist with demonstrations of good hygiene; good health practices, tracking exercise routines, counting calories, looking at the nutritional value of a particular food and many more things applicable to health.  The iPad would also allow me to take pictures and videos in my classroom and to email those videos or pictures to parents to show them how well a student did on his or her presentation.  This will be a great opportunity for me to use this tool to help my students learn.  I am very excited to begin using this in my classroom and use this grant to enhance the students learning ability,” stated T.J. Brindley, health and physical education teacher at Salem Hills High.

Terry Krieger-James, AP Language teacher at Salem Hills High, said, “First of all, thanks to the Nebo Foundation for approving my grant. I am excited to be able to explore the use of the iPad in my classes. I will immediately use the iPad by connecting it to my classroom projector. The projector will enable me to share iPad technology and Apps with all of my students. Eventually, I hope to have class sets of iPads and to prepare for this, I will begin developing lessons that will allow groups of students to use the iPad and selected Apps. These groups will then connect the iPad to the projector and present their work to the class. I will alternate which groups will use the iPad, and all students will have a chance to use this technology. I hope that these experiences will increase student involvement and learning.”

“Thanks, that’s great! I will be using one App that lets me identify trees just by taking a picture of its leaves. I like the virtual dissecting labs in biology,” stated Steve Haskell, biology teacher at Salem Hills High.

Cherry Creek – Kim Golding and Amy Braithwaite
“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am SO excited that I practically skipped down the hall to make sure my team members and Mr. Balzotti had heard the news! This grant means so much to me! The technology at our school has been limited and I'm so thrilled to feel like I'm part of the ever evolving technology revolution! Having this iPad in my classroom will be such a great way for me to include technology and a bit of fun into my teaching. Not only can I use the camera as a document camera, but I can use the Apps available to teach whole and small class lessons. I can also use it to add educational video clips to my lessons to enhance my students' learning. I am looking forward to getting comfortable with its features and all the great ways it can be an asset in my classroom! I am so excited Mr. Balzotti is giving us matching funds of $250 from our recent school-wide fundraiser. He already has the money set aside from our sales so that we could be ready to order if our grant was approved. He is so great to help us with matching funds whenever possible. Again, I say Thank You!!!  I am so excited,” expressed Kim Golding, first-grade teacher at Cherry Creek Elementary.

Amy Braithwaite, first-grade teacher at Cherry Creek, said, “A great big thank you from me, as well as the students in my class, for the grant we received through the foundation.  We will be using the grant money to purchase an iPad for our classroom.  I am so excited for all the possibilities this affords us.  The iPad will be used in many reading capacities such as a listening center, guided reading, handwriting, and sight word practice.  We will also be doing a lot with content areas.  Having the iPad will allow us to go to places and learn things we wouldn't have been able to without it.  We have great plans for this iPad and appreciate so much for what you have given us. Thank you!”
