Nebo Students Excelled at Several Science and Engineering Fairs

Nebo Students were awarded over $250,000 in scholarships and won two of the five coveted final positions at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Los Angeles, California on May 8-13, 2011.

One of the first place winners is Jacob Johnson from Salem Hills High in the category of Senior Behavioral & Social Science Motivation and Cognitive Function: Examining the effect of motivation on low-stake test scores. The other first place team is Brielle Woolsey and Natalia Anderton from Springville High in the category of Biochemistry & Chemistry: The Synthesis and Size Reduction of Dispersed Aggregates of Molybdenum Oxide Nanoparticles for use in Long Chain Hydrocarbon Cracking.

At the Nebo School Board of Education, Jacob Johnson presented his projected detailing his findings with the relationship between motivation and low test scores. There is a definite increase in achievement  depending on the intrinsic motivation.

Brielle Woolsey also presented the project of finding a better and cheaper process of cleaning crude oil. When asked about how the team came up with this idea, she said that a science teacher asked if there were any girls that wanted to participate in a grant through BYU with Cosmas, Inc. Both she and Natalia Anderton signed up. Through this project, the girls have developed a 20 percent more efficient process that can save refineries a lot of money in the cleaning of crude oil. The team is still working on some of the details.

Patrick Hogle, Nebo District Science Fair Coordinator, exclaimed, “This is the world championship of science fairs! I am so proud of our students, they represented themselves, their teachers, schools, and Nebo District so well!”

Patrick addressed the Nebo School Board about the recent award winners. He reported that 29 schools participated with 284 students. Almost every school sent judges totaling over 91 judges at the local level.

The Central Utah Science & Engineering Fair (CUSEF) held at Brigham Young University (BYU) is open to all students in grades 5-12 who reside within the school district boundaries of the Alpine, Jordan, Nebo, Provo and Wasatch school districts. Students must be selected from their school to advance on to compete at their district level science fair in order to become eligible to compete at CUSEF. Students in the Alpine, Jordan, Nebo, Provo and Wasatch school districts must compete at their district science fair and charter school students must compete at the regional charter school science fair. Home school students must compete in the Wasatch Home Educators Network science fair and Private school students must contact CUSEF directly to determine eligibility." (CUSEF Web Page).
