Nebo High School Students Build Upscale House for Sale

Nebo High School students are building an upscale house in an upscale neighborhood, with construction almost complete. "They've done some of everything," said general contractor Tom Hawks, who heads home-building education for the Nebo School District. "From the cement work and framing to hanging doors."

“We are trying to expose students to possible careers," said Joanne Tuttle, director of Career and Technical Education for Nebo School District. "But it's not only job skills that they learn. It's life skills."

For specialty jobs, Hawks took bids from local contractors who were willing to work alongside the students.

"Since we're only there for two hours a day, we had to get people to do what we can't finish in time," he said. "One of the criteria was that they would demonstrate for the students and let us help."

A longtime general contractor himself, Hawks comes to the job well qualified as a graduate in construction management from BYU.

"He is a tremendous asset for us to have teach this class," Tuttle said.

Barber, a student, said he is proud of what he and the other students have accomplished. "It's pretty cool to see how it went up by just high school students who didn't know anything -- but now we do."

Students interested in helping to build next year's house, which will be in Salem, can register for the class through their respective high schools. Male and female high school students of any grade are welcome, Hawks said.
