The Nebo Education Foundation awards grants for March 2011.

These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board and donations from individuals and businesses that support students and public education. One fund-raising effort is the annual "Green Fever" golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year. The "Green Fever" golf tournament will be held on Friday, May 6, at the Spanish Oaks Golf course.

Barnett – leveled library, projector and document camera

We cannot adequately express how grateful we are for the grant to improve the number and quality of texts in our guided reading library. Early literacy instruction and intervention have become a top priority at Barnett. The teachers are focusing on specific guided reading elements and have become skilled in observing and analyzing students reading behaviors. Subsequently, they are using their assessment to guide reading instruction. With the funds provided from this grant, teachers have the ability to select texts that meet individual student’s needs. We are eager to begin using the new texts in our guided reading lessons. Thank you for your generosity," Julie Beveridge, reading recovery specialist.

Thank you so much. I am very excited about having this new technology installed in my classroom. It will take the place of an overhead projector, a television and DVD player. It will be used in place of making and distributing handouts for the kids to use. I am excited to be able to make better use of the Utah Education Network (UEN) website to project and teach concepts. Thanks again," stated Jack White, first-grade teacher at Barnett Elementary.

Salem Elementary – projectors and document cameras

Julie Ellison and Tasha Lewis, special education teachers at Salem Elementary, stated, "We are so excited to have received this grant for the document camera and projector. With the technology available to us on the internet, the projector and document camera will help us utilize this technology by putting our computer screens onto the big screen, making these pictures bigger and functional for every student. Thanks so much."

Mapleton Junior – Kuta math software

Julie Park, math teacher at Mapleton Junior High, said, " On behalf of Mapleton Junior High School Math Team, I would like to express how very grateful we are for the approval of our grant application. We look forward to purchasing the Kuta Math Software. We know that we will be able to use it as a valuable resource as we plan for next year. The software will allow us, as teachers, to customize worksheets and tests. We will be able to use the software to supplement our current text books. We are so appreciative of the generosity of the Nebo Education Foundation. We know that money is extremely tight in our district, so this grant is a substantial gift to our program. This grant money will be used to benefit all of our students for years to come. Thanks for all you do!"

Diamond Fork Junior – document cameras for math team

"We certainly appreciate the foundation being so considerate, anxious and generous for good things that we try do in the classroom to enhance student learning. Thank you again," said Dennis Olsen, Diamond Fork Junior math teacher.

Spring Lake – document cameras first grade, second grade

"The second grade team at Spring Lake Elementary has been actively working on getting the funding for document cameras and projectors in our classrooms for about a year now. We were ecstatic to have our efforts come to fruition through the Nebo Education Foundation. This technology will greatly enhance our teaching and open a variety of new learning opportunities for our students. We will use this technology to provide visual, tactile experiences in literacy, math, and science. Our students are as excited as we are and are anticipating the use of this new technology in our classrooms," stated the Spring Lake Elementary second grade team.

First-grade team at Spring Lake Elementary said, "Thank you so very much for awarding us a grant to buy document cameras for our first-grade classrooms! The number of ways that they will enhance our teaching are endless. We know that we will use our document cameras each day to help students be more engaged in learning. The opportunities for student participation will be greatly increased. Again, thank you very much. We can’t wait to start using them!"

Hobble Creek – projectors and document cameras

"Thank you for accepting our grant proposal to equip our classrooms with instructional technology. We believe by equipping our classrooms with document cameras and projection systems, students’ learning will be enhanced. The document cameras will allow students to see different forms of media that proves to be beneficial to each student. Students will be eager and involved in showing and sharing their work with their classmates. Projection systems allows us to show the media presented on the document camera and also allows students to watch educational video clips, complete WebQuests, play educational games, and review material of many different subject areas. By using a variety of different kinds of media, students begin to realize that learning expands outside the classroom and into the world. Thanks again," stated Lisa Nissen and Alison Snow, sixth-grade teachers at Hobble Creek Elementary.

Congratulations to all our wonderful teachers that inspire the minds of children!
